How do I set-up Bridging?

More and more people are wanting a set-up like this now:-

Wireless using my PC

But ICS in this configuration will only give you a NAT of moderate, the reason being is because your Xbox ends up on a different subnet so it can only do a moderate NAT at best. But there is a way!!

You can use bridging, what this does is to turn two network interfaces into one virtual interface, anyway I'm sure your more bothered about how its done rather than the tech stuff so here we go:-

Before you start, make sure that ICS is not running on the PC. If its on, take it off and reboot the PC to get a clean start.

Now call up your network connections so it looks like the picture below

Left click on the mouse button to select your wireless card, then, hold down the left control button (Left-Ctrl) and keep it held down while you left click on the mouse button over the local area connection. Now both connections should be highlighted like this:-

Now right click the mouse button over one of the highlighted connections and choose "Bridge Connections". Wait about 5 seconds for things to shuffle around and a new Network bridge icon will appear like so

At this stage, make sure your PC/Laptop can still browse the internet ok. If it can't, reboot the PC and see if its ok before proceeding. If it still does not work after a reboot, get the very latest drivers for your wireless card. Please Note: These instructions do work, but getting it working on your own set-up very much depends on the make/model of your wireless adaptor. Many adaptors do not support Promiscuous mode which is needed to make the bridge work.

If your bridge is not working, please follow this link to find a possible work around for your adaptor. Forcing the card into promiscuous mode

Now simply connect the Xbox to your PC's network card like you would using ICS. But instead of manually configuring the details on the Xbox Dashboard, just set everything to Auto.

Run the Xbox live tests and you should get NAT=Open

If you want to back out these changes for any reason, simply click on the Network Bridge icon and hit delete.
