No thats not how it works.
So you're saying.. 1920x1080i = 1920x540p
Correct per definition:
1920 * 540 = 1.036.8
1280 * 720 = 921.6
Theres still more pixels on the screen for 1080i, and you still have a higher resolution. Whether you notice fracturing is another thing.
There is a lot debate about whether or not the interlaced lines should count or not because the human eye cannot tell the difference unless the frame rate is extremely high. This is dependent on how good your eyes are, the size of your TV, whether or not you're using Plasma, LCD, or DLP, and how far away you are sitting from your TV.
This is why you cannot say 1 is better than the other in all scenarios.
Btw, I have my PS3 settings with both 720p and 1080i checked off. Most of the time, it will run on whatever native resolution the game is in. That way, you know you are getting the best picture no matter what options you have.
