Wolverine's Alternate Looks
Find out which costumes show up in Logan's latest foray into videogames.
April 20, 2009 - Few comic book characters have changed looks as often as Wolverine. And somehow he pulls each one off with aplomb. What other character could get away with bright yellow and blue? But Wolverine makes it work. We knew that the Canuck's latest adventure in X-Men Origins: Wolverine would include some unlockable costumes, but weren't sure which ones would be available. So we went to Project Lead Dan Vondrak at Raven Software to get the lowdown on Logan's bonus duds.
IGN: What alternate costumes are in the game?
Dan Vondrak: The unlockable costumes are the Classic Blue and Yellow, the Brown and Tan, and the black X-Force uniform. And those are just the unlockables -- as the story progresses Wolverine changes outfits a lot to match that point in the story -- tank top and jeans, jacket, jungle military outfit, nothing in Weapon X, well... almost nothing. However if you choose to play with one of the unlockables, we'll keep you in the unlockable, we won't switch to the other story outfits.
Only one man makes bright yellow stylish, bub!
IGN: Why did you pick those?
Dan Vondrak: The Blue and Yellow and Brown and Tan--those are such huge favorites to the guys on the team. We all grew up with one of those 2 outfits being the Wolverine we knew and loved. For the third skin I wanted to do something that people hadn't seen much and our art lead (a huge Wolverine fan) brought up the X-Force skin and it was a great suggestion. It looked very bad-ass and we had seen it mentioned by the fans on the forums.
IGN: How did you decide which costumes to use?
Dan Vondrak: It started here at Raven -- what do we as fans want to see? And then we looked back on all the feedback we got back from our previous X-Men/Marvel games -- which Wolverine skins got the best response from the gamers and fans. We dug through forums on game websites, marvel.com, etc... looking for more thoughts on the costumes. And it was clear we had to go with the classic yellow/blue, brown/tan -- it was a pretty heated battle for that third spot.
IGN: Will they be used in cutscenes? Will they take damage and fall away like regular Wolverine's tank top?
Dan Vondrak: Every unlockable costume takes damage and gets blown away--that's half the fun of using them. It's like a comic seeing Wolverine in the blue and yellow, half blown away with his ribs exposed. Good news is, we allow them to regenerate, unlike Wolverine's other cloths in the game. That was a big point for me -- I love seeing the damage done to them, but you picked the costume to see Wolverine in it -- so it will regenerate after his muscle and skin does.
Different costume, same ability to gut people.
The costume you're wearing will appear in a lot of the cutscenes but not all of them. Any of the scenes we had to make pre-rendered movies will have Wolverine in the appropriate costume for that part of the story.
IGN: What costume did you want to get in the game but couldn't?
Dan Vondrak: Zombie Wolverine!!! I wanted this so bad. One of the marketing guys, actually bought me a Zombie Wolverine statue when we were at Comic Con -- he knew how disappointed I was that we couldn't get it in.
IGN: Why couldn't you?!
Dan Vondrak: It's one of those weird situations dealing with the different universes and storylines inside Marvel properties. I was upset about it at first, but I give props to Marvel for taking so much care with their characters -- I think it's part of what has helped them become such a force in the movies and other non-comic media.
IGN: So Dan, how do you unlock them?
Dan Vondrak: We wanted to do something a little more with unlocking the costumes, then just a message that you unlocked it. So we've got this pretty cool system where you find "action figures" hidden throughout the levels. Each action figure is dressed in one of the unlockable costumes, once you've found enough of each type you unlock a special challenge map. In this challenge map you must fight a Wolverine dressed up in the uniform you are trying to unlock! So it's you against a Wolverine with all the moves and powers you have in a bloody beat down, just ripping each other apart. If you can beat the Wolverine, then you unlock the costume. It is a lot of fun fighting another Wolverine.
