The news many people have been anticipating for weeks, or even years, has finally been announced. Total Freedom. With today's press release and teaser trailer released for dissection by the ever hungry PES fan base, Konami has announced PES 2011 with a bang.
The focus of the press release is clearly the fans and their valuable feedback which is helping push PES to another level.
It's hard to pick one place to start with some many issues mentioned, but for many, I think the biggest talking point is the statement about animations. It's no secret that PES 2010 wasn't the smoothest of games and this instantly put some gamers off, but PES 2011 promises to completely revamp every aspect of how the game moves. Throwing some numbers about, there's over 1000 new animations created from over 100 hours of motion capture footage. We saw some of the motion capture sessions during the build up to the last game with cover star Lionel Messi donning the lycra suit.
The animation system has constantly been brought up on the forums for the last few years since the jump to the 'next-gen' consoles. Many have criticised it as the major flaw with the game, and others have submitted suggestions to Have Your Say and the feedback surveys of the past two years telling Konami exactly how they feel about it. In addition to movement animations, there's also talk about improved jostling and tackling, which again has been something PES fans have been clamouring for. Add all this to the raft of ambient animation improvements mentioned and even the most sceptical fan will be salivating.
Of course, what good would all the animation improvements be if the player didn't have control over the most important things on the pitch; The players. The opening paragraphs of the press release should calm any fears PES fans have and get the community buzzing about the possibilities of PES 2011.
The introduction of passing power gauges is sure to get people talking, as I know many posters were in favour of their introduction. Have Your Say submissions, including those by LK79 asking for power bar for through balls -
http://forums.pesfan.com/showthread.php?t=162109 – and PES aficionado Trance Allstar's request for passing gauges -
http://forums.pesfan.com/showthread.php?t=165721 – both talk about the positives of the introduction of such a system. There have been many more submissions and discussions on the forums debating how they would improve the game, and Konami have reiterated their improved fan feedback by including this well requested feature for PES 2011.
Not only have power bars been introduced, but with full control over the placement of passes and shots, players can no longer blame the AI for errant balls! An intriguing addition the game will be how the stamina gauge affects the accuracy and power of passes and shots. In a feature introduced to PES Wii last year, and again requested via Have Your Say -
http://forums.pesfan.com/showthread.php?t=217142 - the game will now calculate how a lung busting run from midfield will affect the outcome when the ball is kicked. Expect to say many crosses going awry after sprinting down the wing.
The single player side of the game almost lives or dies entirely on the AI of your COM opposition. Several users expressed dissatisfaction with the AI of the opposition and team mates in PES 2010. For PES 2011, the press release mentions specially the difficulty level being harder thanks to improved defensive AI positioning and intelligence(another requested feature -
http://forums.pesfan.com/showthread.php?t=222258 ); add this to the greater control on offer to the player and the lack of assisted AI routines, and Top Player should be something hard to master.
In addition to the improved intelligence of the outfield AI players, the goalkeepers have been worked on, both in aesthetic and AI terms, which is sure to come as a relief to many, including ChingizKhan, who wrote this lengthy submission for Have Your Say. -
http://forums.pesfan.com/showthread.php?t=222255 The major gripe of many, the referees, have also been worked on to help keep the game as realistic as possible.
Almost hidden at the end of the press release is something that would have taken top billing on other releases in something many fans thought a pipe dream; Master League online. Yes, you read that right. The biggest plus point of PES 2010 in my book was the totally revamped Master League which I'm still involved with to this day.
PESFan has been running an 'online of sorts' Master League tournament for the past few years with dozens of players competing against each other to buy players and finish top of the pile, but this news totally revolutionizes the concept of online Master League. I for one can't wait to find out more details.
The UEFA Champions League and Europa League, have also both been expanded.
The tag line of the press release is 'Total revamp, total freedom, total football.' The new animation system is just as important as total control over the ball and players, which combined with the myriad of new features, promises to give PES fans exactly what they've been asking for.
