Q: What is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning?

A: Reckoning is an epic, open world role-playing game that gives fans their first experience with Kingdoms of Amalur, a new universe imagined by R.A. Salvatore, brought to life by Todd McFarlane, and designed by Ken Rolston and his team at Big Huge Games.

R.A. Salvatore is the creator of the immortal Drizzt Do’Urden and author of The New York Times best-selling Forgotten Realms series. Todd McFarlane is a Grammy and Emmy-award winning artist, writer and toy designer best known for creating the fantasy series Spawn. Ken Rolston served as the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion before joining Big Huge Games development studio, the Baltimore, MD-based wholly-owned subsidiary of 38 Studios, based in Maynard, MA.

Q: What can you tell me about the game?

A: Set in the Kingdoms of Amalur universe, Reckoning will offer unrivaled RPG action combat, seamlessly integrating magical and melee attacks into an innovative and visceral experience. Reckoning includes hundreds of quests, characters, creatures, weapons and spells. More details about the game will be revealed over the coming weeks and months.

Omdat toch niemand volledige previews gaat lezen, hier een samenvatting (gejat van een ander forum):

    Lore
•It is the Age of Arcana and magic is on the rise
•Everyone that is born into the world of Amalur has a fate, a “destiny,” that is chosen for them. This destiny ends in death.
•You are the first to have been brought back from death via the Well of Souls.
•The Well of Souls is a magical edifice built by a gnome named, Fomorious Hughes.
•You are brought back without a fate, without a destiny and can shape it as you see fit.
•There are massive social and political implications behind the possibility of being able to change your fate.

    Character Creation
•There are four races to choose from (Almain, Varani, Liosalfar, and Dokkalfar).
•The two human races are the Almain and the Varani.
•The two elvish races are the Liosalfar and the Dokkalfar.
•Each race comes with specific stat bonuses.
•You can play as a male or female without any impact on gameplay.
•Each races comes with a choice of spiritual sign that gives other stat bonuses. This choice varies depending on your race.
•You can fully customize the look of your character.

    Talent Trees
•There are three talent trees: Might, Finesse, and Sorcery.
•You gain talent points as you level.
•You can place points wherever you see fit.
•Where you place points unlocks certain destinies, granting further stat bonuses.

    Combat
•A single button is used for attack.
•There is a hard-core statistical underpinning to your effectiveness in combat.
•Combos are triggered based on timing and set up (i.e. attacking out of a block, pausing, holding down the attack button, attacking out of a dodge...).
•Parrying is possible with a shield or magical Talisman.
•Parrying is based on a timed response to an attack dealt by your foe.
•Dodging and Teleporting are utilized for defense.
•Fate-shift attacks are finishing moves that grant some kind of bonus that affects your destiny.
•You can equip two weapons at a time, and can change between them mid-combo.
•Spells are chosen via the distribution of talent points.

    Loot
    •The game features a Diablo-style loot system.
•Over 2 million possible permutations in the loot.
    •Unique gear is available.
•You can equip gear directly from a side-by-side comparison in the loot window.
    •Gear has a durability value.
•We saw two different long swords, a great hammer, an ice staff, and the dual-weilded Shokrum in the demo.

    Crafting
•Three known types of crafting exist: Blacksmithing, Sagecrafting, and Alchemy.
•Sagecrafting incorporates the socketing of gems into weapons, thereby granting further bonuses to gear.

    Exploration
•Reckoning is an open world game.
•You can go wherever you want.
•There is a main quest line and, of course, side quests.
•There is “hundreds” of hours of gameplay for someone who wants to accomplish everything.
•There are over 100 dungeons in the game.
•There are five main areas and the demo only covered a very small portion of one of them.
•In the demo, the areas we saw were the Well of Souls, Dalentarth, the town of Didenhil, and the dungeon Urul-Tusk.

    Monsters (seen in the demo)
    •Faer Gorta: skeletal warriors.
    •Assassins: dual weilding, human fighters.
    •Boggarts: small, mask-wearing pests.
•Banshaen: the brood mother of the Murgan.
•Murgan: trident-wielding warriors, capable of summoning lighting alongside the Banshaen.
•Kobolds: low level cave-dwellers that throw fire and spears.
    •Troll: a massive mini-boss weilding a huge wooden club.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and the Bad-Ass Mage
Casting spells won't keep you from beating people to death.

Warriors get in close and beat the crap out of skeletons, zombies, and demons. Wizards stay back and spam fireballs and other spells. This is the natural state of fantasy RPGs. There's always a sacrifice choosing one over the other. Either you lose the visceral elements of hacking and slashing or you lose out on cool-looking spell effects . The 2012 RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning destroys this old notion. You can be both. This game has the bad-ass mage.

Dual-wielding razor-edged throwing discs, called Shakram, the mage can be a force in combat even without the benefit of his spells. The combat is simple button presses with a system similar to Fable -- with a button dedicated to melee, one for ranged attacked and one for spells. While the mage's staff may not cleave enemies in half like a sword, it can have similar attack chains. The mage lacks a true warrior's strength, but not his skill at putting the beat-down on enemies.

And, like any character in Reckoning, the mage has access to fate-shift kills. These special finishing moves are rewards for effective use of combos and lead to brutal, cinematic kills of enemies. These end with a simple button mash to finish off an enemy, but fate-shift kills give that sense of combat superiority over an enemy. An odd feeling, for sure, for a mage in an RPG.

Rather than a roll-dodge, the mage teleports short distances. In skilled hands, this is an impressive tool to get in close, dodge a stream of attacks, unleash a devastating combo with the staff, leap backwards and throw the Frisbee-like Shakram to slice into an enemy before tossing a fireball to finish the group off.

A mage is all about spells -- at least that's the expectation -- and there seem to be plenty in Reckoning to play with. A detonation spell seems quite effective. You tag multiple enemies, then choose when the spell "explodes" them. This adds more strategy to magic than I'm used to seeing. And then there's the big daddy spell -- the meteor strike. Just as it sounds, this rains down hell. This one's at the top of the spell tree, so you'll have to work to acquire it. And when it's used, be sure you have some distance from the strike point, because it's easy to get caught in the massive blast.

Now consider being able to mix this in with weapons such as the Shakram or a staff that is almost as effective as a sword and it's easy to see how mage combat in Reckoning could be very special.

The beauty is the way each element of combat chains together. Going from one to the next looks fluid and opens up the possibilities for tackling a group of enemies. Mages no longer have to hang to the outside, backing away at an enemy's approach. Though you may have some AI-controlled allies along the way, Reckoning has you largely on your own. Now you don't have to lose having an awesome hand-to-hand combat experience for the sake of being a spellcaster.

This is largely made possible thanks to Reckoning's player progression system. There isn't a point in Reckoning where you pick a class and are stuck along a particular way of leveling up. Instead, Reckoning has a series of "destinies" which players invest experience points into. As you pump in experience to the mage destiny, you unlock new spells and skills. But at any point, you can start investing in the warrior destiny. In this way, you can create different hybrid classes that suit your gaming style.

In truth, there shouldn't be many pure mages in Reckoning. Instead, most people will create interesting amalgams of traditional roles -- a heap of the mage spells here, a dose of warrior might there, and a dash of rogue stealth to top it off. Even if you do stick strictly to the mage path, you will have skill enough to utilize your non-spell aspects and mix it up with enemies. But I find the possibilities of melding these different skillsets into my own unique character the most exciting prospect of Reckoning.
