Crytek UK has been teasing TimeSplitters 4 for almost four years now, starting with a short video back in 2008 before sending the rumour mill into a frenzy the following year by announcing that a TimeSplitters sequel could still be a possibility. Today however, Crytek UK has put an end to the rumours and speculation, by confirming that TimeSplitters 4 is not in development.
Asked about the status of TimeSplitters 4 by CVG, a spokesperson for the developer joked that it had "spent all of the development budget on buying monkeys." When pressed for a more serious answer, Crytek UK confirmed the worst, saying simply: "No, it's not in development."
Here's the complete 'hilarious' statement from Crytek UK: "For Timesplitters 4, with ever spiralling development costs, massive teams and endless crunch we decided on a more radical development strategy," reads the statement. "In short, the experiment was to implement the infinite monkey theorem. With cloning being a far too expensive option, we spent all of the development budget on buying monkeys on the black market."
It was those monkeys doing all the teasing apparently, the statement continues. "Those seven monkeys are now sat in a room with typewriters and lots of mirrors, and we fully expect Timesplitters 4 to be finished soon. Rumours are that they haven't written any code but just tease the press from time to time. Those damn monkeys."
We're not sure that TimeSplitters fans who'd been hoping to see a fourth game after the last game, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, launched way back in 2005, will see the funny side of Crytek UK's statement. Here's hoping that TimeSplitters 4 isn't completely off the table.
