UK GOSSIP SHOWS XBOX 2 SPECS
Here we go again. According to some rather paranoid sources, here's what developers in the UK have been told to work towards by Microsoft
18:33 Following an intense round of rumour in the past 24 hours, a set of specs has emerged which apparently relates to Xbox 2.
Sources have leaked the figures, but have made clear that this is not a look at final hardware, but merely a guideline to certain developers - such as Rare and Lionhead - for the construction of their next-generation Xbox games.
According to sources, Xbox 2 games about to go into development are looking at the following specs as a guide: 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 central processor, 512MB of RAM, NV30 graphics chip.
"People are very edgy about this due to some serious NDAs [Non-Disclosure Agreements - Ed]," said one insider under conditions of strict anonymity. "But you have to understand that this is simply Microsoft getting ready for the next round of development. These specs are pretty widely known in the development community right now."
It's worth noting that nVidia's NV30 chip will be seriously under-powered come 2004; the chip releases later this year. But the mere fact the chip is made by nVidia throws up yet more questions; nVidia, following a legal spat with Microsoft earlier this year about earnings and sales projections, is now widely tipped to be out of the running to supply Xbox 2's GPU.
Both these points clearly show that these specs are merely telling developers to work at a far higher end than current Xbox hardware allows. Even for the dev kits, these are not final specs by any means.
The news emerges as those close to Rare, Lionhead and Microsoft confirm that preliminary rounds of talks regarding Xbox have already got under way in the UK.
So there you go. Xbox 2 games will run faster and look prettier than Xbox games. That's entertainment.
