The WCG (World Cyber Games) Organizing Committee announced the following console titles to be the official WCG 2003 console game titles: Halo and SSX Tricky.
To select the first official console games of the WCG, the WCG Game Event Selection Committee gathered gamer opinions via an Internet poll last year and decided on one FPS game, Halo, and one sports game, SSX Tricky, as the official games among the candidate titles. Careful consideration was given regarding genre trends and the support of publishers and developers for optimal operation of the competition in each game.
Halo has attracted a strong community throughout the world and has confirmed that a console game in the FPS genre can be extremely successful.
SSX Tricky is a sports console game that supports two main types of snowboarding competition: racing and the showcasing of tricks. The WCG tournament will be focus mainly on the more exciting and viewer-friendly showoff mode. SSX Tricky is available on two console platforms, the PS2 and the XBox. The publisher of SSX Tricky, EA, has yet to decide on which platform should be used in the WCG 2003. However, it is anticipated that the final decision will be released soon.
With this announcement, all of the WCG 2003 official games have been unveiled. In terms of game genres, the WCG 2003 should address a diverse range to appeal to a comprehensive share of the worldwide game community including three FPS games (Half-Life: Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament 2003, Halo), three RTS games (StarCraft: Brood War, WarCraft III, Age of Mythology), and two sports games (FIFA 2003, SSX Tricky).
The WCG Organizing Committee will announce additional details on competition modes, rules, and platforms for national preliminaries later in March.
