    Hands-on: Borderlands
Article by: Hadlee Simons, Thu, 08 Oct 2009 14:16

Gearbox Software's new FPS/RPG hybrid is an interesting game to say the least. As a new IP (intellectual property), an undertaking like this is a huge challenge for any developer. But 'Borderlands' seeks to go even above and beyond that.

Quickly swinging by the Megarom stand at rAge 2009, we were treated to a variety of great games, but it was clear which game looked to be star of the show: yes, 'Borderlands'. And so we decided to commandeer a PC to check it out.

'Borderlands' initial realistic graphical style was replaced by a cartoony, cell-shaded style. This drew the ire of many fans, but we can now safely say that the game carries this look very well.

The demo starts you off in a little town of sorts, with you being tasked to kill five little critters, eight bandits and collect a few items before been given your first mission. 'Borderlands' instantly drew comparisons to 'Fallout 3' from many in attendance but the game has more tricks up its sleeve than what meets the eye...

The first and unarguably the most important feature is the weapon generation system used in the game, capable of generating millions of guns — in fact, during his presentation, Take 2 representative David Hels claimed that 'Borderlands' contains over 16-million weapons!

    Lock 'n load baby!

The weapon generation system resulted in wildly different weapons being found during our demo — from a pistol that deals out an incredible amount of melee damage to a shotgun with a revolver-style reloading mechanism. A MegaRom representative informed us that guns would be generated randomly for the most part but would also take into account your weapon preferences. Weapons are also categorised according to their rarity, with guns highlighted white being the most common and orange the rarest.

Of course, all the weapons in the world wouldn't be fun without enemies to fire them at and Borderlands does not disappoint. The area just outside the little town was home to a group of little critters and it's here that we found ourselves checking out the combat system for the first time.

With zoom/aiming-down-the-sights assigned to the left trigger, it's clear that 'Borderlands' is all about the shooting.

"Where you aim is where you shoot" as Hels said during the presentation — and it works well. With the monsters jumping for us, spectacular mid-air shots were a certainty. Every enemy in the game has a weak spot to exploit and these little creatures were no exception. We quickly learned that waiting for them to open their mouths was the easiest way to killing them. But a few minutes later we encountered the bandits.

Making use of cover and running away when hurt, these guys are a refreshing change from the thick AI associated with other games. The bandits will often attempt to charge your position if it appears that you are hiding away.

    Harrr!

Another important feature in 'Borderlands' is the looting system in place, drawing on the best parts of Diablo to make killing creatures even more fun. During our playthrough, we often encountered the usual machine gun rounds and repeater rounds but weapons, shield packs and medical packs were also picked up.

Just like 'Diablo', looting with other players equals lots of fun and this is where 'Borderlands' excels in. With four player co-op in the story it becomes mayhem, with no lag and more enemies around. This also saw some frantic moments, with one player backpedalling to avoid an enemy while another runs behind the enemy, blasting away at it.

'Borderlands' seems to have all the key elements down and then some, with tight controls, stylish graphics, co-op both online and off, and awesome weapons. We can't wait to get our hands on a review copy come 23 October!

Nog een artikletje voor ''the fun'':

    How f'ing metal is Borderlands?

1:20 PM on 10.06.2009, Brad Nicholson

Metal is a lot of things. Metal is ripping off a chimera’s head and spitting down its spine hole. Metal is the swagger of a cool protagonist as he walks out of a bar full of corpses he created. Metal is a tone or a plot. Metal is an f’ing feeling.

For the Borderlands crew, metal takes some serious space to describe.

“How f--cking metal is Borderlands,” game creative director Mikey Neumann asks me in response to my question. “Well, I can’t really give you the full answer in such a truncated space, but I can show you an excerpt from our upcoming book How F--cking Metal is Borderlands.”

And show me an excerpt he did. Taken from the middle of the fifth chapter of the upcoming best seller, the bit of the book deals with a meeting of sorts between members of the Borderlands crew and an unassuming teenager at a local Denny’s.

“This is taken from the middle of chapter 5 entitled: ‘The Steel-clad Chi of Being Fucking Metal All the Time and How to Interact with Everyone Else,’ “ Neumann tells me, finishing his thoughts on how to describe metal in such a truncated space.

    This is the excerpt:

I remember a time when none of us at Gearbox were really sure just how metal would could make a game. A specific conversation comes to mind from mid-2006; I believe somewhere around October. I was sitting at a table in the back of a Denny's with Randy Pitchford and Jason Reiss. We were discussing just how metal a game can be before you really start gambling with upsetting the balance of the universe and potentially destroying existence entirely. You know, waffle talk. Borderlands was in such a shy infancy at the time; the elements were being assembled but no one had any idea what we were in store for. So we start shooting the metaphorical shit, and if I remember correctly, it was Jason who posited, "Well, what if we just make a game so freakin' metal (swearing gives him nightmares,) that any game that dares come later will seem about as metal as an episode of Laverne and Shirley." I stroked the cursive L on my chest as I pondered his sentiment.

If we do that, won't that preclude us from making any follow up material? Shouldn't we leave ourselves some space to outdo ourselves should a later need arrive?" Randy suavely said to the two of us. Clever Pitchford, clever. The man had a solid point. If we concentrated on making our game too metal, it would leave us no room to come back and rock the world a second, or god-surviving, a third time. So, the obvious solution was to make a game that was 99% of the way to total, blood-soaked, guitar solo written by the tears of the devil, mayhem.

I proposed a possible solution. What if I were to test our mettle (that is a classic pun, I expect my award is already in the mail) on a random passer-by (in my story, Denny's is a high traffic area, hush.) They had understandable trepidation with the danger of this plan. It could backfire, and no one likes going down on a murder one beef. But I seized an opportunity while they nursed their vaginas back to health quietly at the table. A skinny teenager, probably around sixteen years old, walked past our table holding a delicious looking Grand Slam breakfast. I asked him politely if he would like to see something "cool."

    He shot back, "how cool?"

My eyebrow went up as I paused to find the best way to lure him in. If I explained the true nature of my experiment he would surely cower in terror. I said, "Spin Doctors cool, broseph" (that's how teenagers talk to each other. When you encounter them in the wild, you have to speak their native tongue.) He obliged and walked closer, but did not set down his plate. Randy then proceeded to explain the entire game to him. From start to finish. Every detail, every nuance, every midget punted off the planet into low-level orbit around Pandora ... all of it. When Randy had finished there was a long silence where the kid said nothing. He just stood there, trembling.

Which is when he turned into an eighteen foot tall, three headed serpent sporting 26 guitars all playing in perfect 26-part, face-melting, harmony. It was a single song lasting forty seven minutes before ending in a pyrotechnics display worthy of a Steven Seagal straight-to-DVD masterpiece. This left most of the patrons in the establishment charred and dying, albeit cheering loudly until their vocal chords were burnt out of their throats. When the serpent had finished his solo, he withered and fell to the ground before turning into a dry white ash and perishing in our presence.

"Yeah, that was pretty metal" Jason said as he casually poured more raspberry syrup over his waffle."

“It does go on from there,” Neumann teases me, “but obviously I want you guys to check out the book when it comes out. The serpent does resurrect itself later in the chapter and play a second zombie-laden set with three encores.”

Notice how much fucking metal is involved in the latter sentence. Neumann is a metal machine, a regular fucking monster of metal. He continues. “You guys can check out the game and judge for yourselves until your mom grounds you for transforming into a living demon with excellent eye-hand coordination.“

    “Oct 20th, bitches,” Neumann finishes.

    Borderlands Updated Hands-On - High-Level Gameplay
By Andrew Park, GameSpotPosted Oct 8, 2009 5:51 pm PT

We get our hands on some of the later stages of Borderlands, including deserted towns, alien invasions, and...snowstorms?

Borderlands is the upcoming first-person shooter/role-playing hybrid game from Texas-based studio Gearbox. It puts you in the role of a freelance bounty hunter in search of the treasure hidden in an ancient vault on a mostly deserted mining planet. But as you make your way through the world of Pandora, recovering more-powerful weapons and gaining experience levels by fighting off scavengers and the local wildlife, you come to understand that the job you're on isn't going to be as simple as waltzing right into the vault and walking off with the goods--and that you're not just up against a few crazy bandits, either. We had a chance to hunker down with some of the later parts of the game and have much to report, but please be advised that this story may contain minor spoilers.

Your character does, in fact, start out on a simple treasure hunt but quickly learns that nabbing the goods won't be easy. That's because the location of the vault is secret, it's guarded by dangerous enemies, and also…you're not the only one after it. We stepped into the shoes of a high-powered siren, one of the game's four playable professions, which focuses on stealth and "elemental" damage bonuses added to her various weapons. As we mentioned in our previous coverage, the siren has an inherent "phasewalk" ability that lets her become invisible for a limited amount of time, becoming completely undetectable to her enemies. At higher levels, this ability can become significantly more powerful, since it can let her effectively sneak around oblivious enemies in the middle of battle, and it can be upgraded so that when she leaves her phasewalk state and returns to "normal," she deals an explosive burst of damage to her nearby targets, not unlike the backstab attack that thief and assassin characters often use in traditional role-playing games.

In addition, at the higher levels, the siren's elemental abilities make her weapons deadly. To clarify, Borderlands has an unusual random loot system that will let you find different weapons as loot (or for purchase from one of the game's many weapon vending machines) that may have totally random properties, such as faster firing rates, better accuracy, and, most importantly, a chance to deal bonus damage, such as additional fire, electricity, or poison-based wounds on a successful hit. The siren character's various specializations increase the likelihood that her weapons will deal this bonus damage and increase the actual bonus damage levels.

Although the siren is presented as a challenging character to play (because she has less health and fewer weapon specializations than other classes), the enhanced damage of her elemental bonuses actually seem to help compensate for poor aim, since even a few lucky hits may trigger bonus elemental damage that continues to eat away at your enemies, and since a few of the siren's abilities deal damage to enemies in an area, so your firing doesn't always have to be precise. Of course, since Borderlands has a critical hit system that awards well-placed shots with bonus damage, being precise does help.

In our time in the advanced areas of the game, we visited a few different areas with a character that was ridiculously powerful--several levels ahead of each area and armed to the teeth with a high-powered sniper rifle, an incendiary submachine gun, and a flat-out ludicrous rocket launcher that just happened to have the ability to fire rockets that split into multiple shots with every pull of the trigger to deliver absurd amounts of damage in a single area. Because we were packing this much heat, we decided to try out our new toys first in Old Haven, a bombed-out town that has been taken over by a mysterious faction of disturbingly organized mercenaries known as the Crimson Lance.

These mercs are apparently after the vault, just like you, and they'll attack you on sight with their own high-powered sidearms and from turret emplacements. They also carry generators that erect translucent red shield barriers, which they can set up in front of themselves to create their own cover. Unless you have a powerful sniper rifle that can zoom in on the tiny body parts they leave exposed, or some very good grenades, like incendiary Bouncing Betties that split off into multiple explosive bits, you'll have to fire on these barriers continuously to wear them down and get at the enemies behind them. Fortunately, we came equipped with both. Still, we found ourselves alternating between sighting far-off enemies to pluck them off with sniper headshots, and scrambling for cover after turning a corner to find a handful of mercs dug in at different locations (on different floors of buildings, behind on-the-ground cover, or manning high-up turrets). In fact, we found ourselves reaching for health packs and occasionally ducking behind cover to recharge our chewed-up personal shields (which work just like those in the Halo series by losing power when you take damage but regenerating if you can get to cover). However, we eventually managed to pick off all our foes--not an easy task even with a fully-loaded character. Then again, for those looking for a real challenge, Borderlands will also offer an enhanced "elite" mode the second time you play through it--the lowly enemies you faced your first time around will start around level 30 or so.

We then skipped ahead to a different area much further in the game, closer to the alien vault. As it turns out, although Borderlands' early areas take place in dusty deserts, there are also more-advanced areas that take place on snowy mountaintops, where the mysterious alien creatures known as the Eridians guard their vault. The Eridians seem like a race of insect-men--several of the lower-level ones walk upright on two legs but have wings and can either take huge flying leaps or simply take to the air and fly. They carry their own ranged weapons but don't seem to hesitate at the opportunity to leap in your face and claw at it. In addition, since they're aliens with totally different bodies than humans, they're effectively immune to headshots, though if you're persistent enough, you can find their weak spots to score critical hits (or you can continue reading this sentence, since they seem most vulnerable in their hindquarters, just below their abdomens).

Fortunately, these beastly aliens aren't immune to rockets, and they're less immune to rocket launchers that fire multiple explosive rounds, and the smaller ones blow up pretty good. However, there are multiple varieties of these aliens, including giant-sized ones, and they don't just walk or fly around on their own power--they also cruise the skies in gigantic alien craft that carry multiple troops. If you're feeling really ambitious, you can open fire on these alien vessels, but doing so can earn you a lot of attention from some very angry aliens.

What we've seen of Borderlands suggests that it will offer all the action of a conventional shooter (different weapon classes, headshots, weapon melee, and significant cover that must be used in the heat of battle to duck out of the way and recharge spent energy shields or reload your clip), along with the unendingly random loot of an addictive RPG. The game is scheduled to ship later this month.
