Hidden in a typical british building, Big Blue Box are working like ants at the peak of the activities. I walk in calmly. Dene Carter walks toward me, at the other end of the corridor splitting the two groups of small square working areas. Dressed in black, his huges yellow flashy socks indicate that the game is nearly ready(?!?!a little ****ed up). For a reason, I come at the worst moment: everybody is occupied at (assembling) the very first fully playable version of FABLE, major event in the difficult birth of a game. ¨the game is all screwed up¨ said Dene, trying to explain to me, confused, that during the process of creating the first playable version, delicate, it is normal that there is some flaws here and there and that we are forced to debug massively, before obtaining this first version. (were going to have to be carefull if it crashes to much. But we still have a lot of things to show you). Inside I already know that I wont even pay attention to that, I'm too happy to be seing again the object of mydesires. FABLE. What exists in the imagination of Dene and his brother Simon since 12 years bearing the name of (THE game). For me, this funny nickname is the name we give to FABLE for about 2 years now.

    AND I REALLY BELIEVE IT

FABLE is a try to get closer to a veteran Gamer's dream. A title of absolute beauty that hides a gameplay of never seen before liberty. But the formula to this still remains secret. After numerous hours of disussion, after having seen it in action 5 times, the main part is still unknown to me. Drop by drop, it is getting clearer, and hope, mixed with fascination, doesnt stop growing: it looks like they really are going to make it, the RPG type of game revolution, the carter brothers. To begin, Dene and simon present me Dean Finnigan, who is one of the animators. He launches his 3d program, show me the model of a character and a few animations. On the screen, the character seems to be reacting to different attitudes.Raising his shoulders and an eyebrows (ignorance), treathening with his finger, looking annoyed... very well done attitudes, but mostly linked to rock solid facial expressions. For each model of characters, Dene works on the mouth synchronisation (not very sure), adjust the generic animations and adds details to make each generic characters from one another... A lot of work, judging by the silent head sign he makes, with his eyes telling a lot about the long hours of slavery working with 3dsmax, when I ask him: (eh, all the characters have different facial expressions and lips movements?) First element of the awnser: the game will use intensivly doubling(All npcs have a voice). While in a standard game we would just have general dialogues , here, developpers also want to use a huge amount of commentaries, discussions and additional vocal effects that will be, or not, adressed to the hero. Someone will ignore you when you'll pass by him if you have run from a lot of combats (your reputation will take those statistics), another will discuss the prowess(heroic actions), of another hero, or will talk of his personal problems with his wife, or will call for the hero to great him, congratulate him about his last success... and the worst is that at this level, kids will be even more detailed then adults. The amount of voices is so huge right now that the main problem of BBB right now is to find a sufficient compression algorythm that wont fill th whole Xbox hard drive! In a general way, the npcs in the game will remember your actions, at different levels, and will react consequently. Everyone diposes of his own personality, modified by his activity, so the reactions will be different for everyone. exemple, if you are taunting a guard, there is more chances he loses his patience then normal peasants... even different npcs having the same job will react differently, small differences will be noticed. the npc just need to be having a (bad day)( his attitude is modified by different elements each day) to change his usual reactions!

    THE IMPORTANCE OF RELATIONS

FABLE will clearly be based on relations. For the developpers, it's one of the essential points: they want the player to create relations with npcs living in cities. On the other side, they were forced to limit some possibilities, to simply keep thing with no solutions from happening like, your hero not being able to come back to a town because you'll have slaugthered too much people there and that all the villagers and guards will charge you if you come close to it. The memory is also selective, they remember more or less things depending on who they are. Exemple, the citizens of a town will remember that you have commited horrible crimes, and even wich ones exactly (thus remembering them to you using there voice), if they are directly concerned, but the guards will mostly remember that you are a trouble maker, and will just try to keep you at sight and will watch you. Some actions will allow you to be (forgiven), or at least try to, starting with corruption. Nothing better then a couple of gold pieces to get peoples interest, but a lot of other objects will make appropriate gifts for each situations. because, again, dont believe that it will be that easy! lets give an exemple: you want to seduce the mayor's older girls, this beautyfull brown haired with his untouchable attitude. If you go offer a ring directly to her, at first sight, you can be sure she'll refuse, saying that you're crazy( unless you're already one of her favorite heroes in Albion ). But , if you start by a flower or a modest box of chocolates, you may have more chances to see her accept the gift, and then make a shy face showing her admiration.

    THE STRONG COMPETITION

we were saying last month that some hero are searching, like you, fame and glory in the world of Albion... or at least are are striking there. Just to give them face here is some of them!
BRIAR ROSE: The first time your hero will meet her, both of them will still be kids. She is calm, introverted(???) and has the gift of vision -she can see the futur. While getting older, she will become more strict.
WHISPER: Here is a preliminary study for Whisper, hero wich goals are still secret. She seems to be siding with good, or neutral since the side of evil is alredy occupied by Ja???(some of the letters are missing) Blades (who's still secret) and Scythe. Whisper's staff looks interesting and full of carvings...
SCYTHE: Scythe is one of the evil guys, totaly rejecting death he has become a powerfull necromancer, consumed by the loss of his wife and by fear. His only goal is to stay alive eternally. therefore, at the beginning of the story, he has a human face, but when we'll cross him 10 years later, his appearance will show clearly his evil experiments.

beside the picture with the 4 guys and the arch: Currently studying the possibility to have henchmens or minions who could fight for the hero... we can also notice on this picture that body hair was implemented
over the undead picture:too much words missing

    SOME GAME SYSTEMS
if a lot of aspects of the game are still missing during the demos we have seen, some are getting clearer. The inventory, for exemple, will be present and will use the final fantasy type (bottomless sack) We will be able to walk and carry all the objects we collected in our bag, not only because it is always stupid tho have to leave good items behind because we dont have the choice, but more because FABLE doesnt think they'll be offering hundreds of different items. May it be armors, weapons, or common usable objects, BBB want to make something important with them, so we can keep them for a good reason. But more then anything, they want them to be used in a lot of different ways. The weapons will be customized by the player. As he will take the habit of using them, he will have to upgrade them, using a system that is still secret... Clothes, gifts, diverse items, all of them will be classified by categories and accessible at all time. The white and black buttons are, for now, two quickbuttons for weapons. For the main character, we will see three general kind of developpments: the physical aspect (strenght, endurance, fighting), the agility (ranged weapons, discretion, thief talents) and spirit (magic, alchemy, etc. (I taught they didnt want to put alchemy in!!)). The developpement of the character will depend of the actions themselves, with their moral aspect, their accumulation, etc. A lot of hidden statistics will be made, counting for exemple of the number of time you beat up this guy, the number of time you have talked to a women, etc. the binary datas will mostly modify the kind of insults or respect that the peoples will say about the hero. Each npc as different tolerance levels about some behaviors the hero could adopt. And each of them also has a changing behavior when they begin to loose this tolerance. Each aspects of this dynamic disposes of a scale, positive and negative. Exemple: some characters will react really positively to proofs of love from the hero, others really negatively. If we try to give chocolates and flirt with a guard, wich are kind of nervous and withouth humor will most likely take it the bad way...

    STREUM(!?!?!):
A REAL JOB (in the black area over the images at the left of the page)

Highway robbers will be ther, we already said it, a kind of generic (repetitive) ennemy in FABLE. But we will find others as well, starting with the little tu get used to it, like scorpions, giant wasps, etc... L'ets look at one of them: the Balverine, getting the most out of his natural environment in the following screenshots (she likes to hide in group in high herbs and attack swiftly)

(bottom of the pics under the tree/rock humanoid monster)

here is some other studies of monsters less frequent but as dangerous. We find in them, the famous earth troll who likes to hide in the form of a hill... (gulp!)

    A LITTLE HOT STUFF

The action will take an important place in the game's formula. Showing clearly an arcade style for this, the devloppers were able to show us some fighting live: it looked really nice.Animations are dynamic and smooth, well joined, and the combo system seems simple to use. Some details contribute, making it all epic and visual, like the possibility to fight against more then one ennemies at a time with a well taught camera and natural movements. The hero blocks blows depending of the direction they arrive from, like Rau in The Mark of Kri, and he gains combos and special attacks as he progress and exchange with other characters. For the ennemies, we have seen scopions, wasps, nymphs and other small calibers of monsters but also bandits with better fighting skills, capable of elaborating simple group strategies like making a circle around the opponent, as well as flee when they need to. Finally, the MAGIC, or WILL as they call it, it activates by pressing the left trigger: as you do this, different icons should allow you to choose the effect and to try and cast spells. When we switch into magic mode, to cast a spell, the game goes slow-motion (SICK!!!). Other details concerning the WILL and its possibilities are still kept secret...

    MYSTERIOUS ATMOSPHERE
(top right of the page, black background, over the pics)

Before conceiving the landscapes and their multiple details, a lot of sketch arts were used to determine the atmosphere emanating from a location. The music, really baed on atmosphere, mixed in 5.1, will add the final touch. Getting us definitively drawn into this fable world with (Tim Burton) accents

(under the blue mansion in the top-left)

over this already exceptionnal render we must imagine dynamic shadows, as they will be added

(under the 4 guys picking on another one)

The hero, on the left, is taking the insults of 3 villagers, while a forth one is hammering him with his fists

    AN UNBEARABLE WAITING

a lot of things are still to do on fable to make it THE game that we are waiting for so much. But the developpers of Big Blue Box are following their planning withouth delay, and are making giant footsteps toward the final version of their ambitious title. A lot of elements are still kept secret, and it's really difficult not to be interessed by more precise infos on some elemental mechanics of this game, but from another point of view, it would be bad if they didnt kept a little bit of surprise for the famous test version. Well, amazing projects like this one are rare and believe me that this exclusive visit of Big Blue Box will not be the last (next time do it in ennglish please :p). After all, we are following this ambitious project for about 2 years, and it's not to stop while it's going so good... We already got a rendez-vous for the next E3 at Los Angeles, wich will take place in may 2003. From now on, do like us, feed on these exclusive screenshots and start imagining what kind of hero you will be!

AND THE TIME IN ALL THIS?

Important data in the adventure in FABLE. Time wont pass like normal time. Organised in chapters the story will treat the important events of the hero's life between different game parts (ex.: the type of wedding, etc.). But beside the specific moments where the time will flow with a speed adapted to narrative, we will be witnessing days that will last about 1 hour in game time. If dynamic shadows are missing in those pictures ( and god knows that they'll still improve the graphics of this game), here is somethign to notice the course of the sun and the moon in the world of Albion, at the current time.

    (under the throwing stars)

one of the sketch arts for weaponf: it has style eh?

(under the hero with lights around him)

When the hero kills, the experience he gains is right now shown graphicly by paticles and light effects.

    (Under the cool tatooed guy)

Tatoos and beards will be collected as cards, presented to the barber or tatoo guy to change your appearance.

    QUESTIONS AGAIN

Like if we didnt had enough of our first interview in 4 parts, some questions seemed important to ask, and it's Dene Carter who awnsered us

eh, the questions have already been translated before, they are the one talking about saves and clothes and dialogues

(top left under the hero with a sword)

The facial expressions of the hero as well as those of the other characters look particularly important for a title like FABLE

    (the pic just below)

The game engine really doesnt need them, the (false loading) will appear (briefly in the form of fades) to warn the player that he is passing from an area to another, potentially dangerous.

(the pic of the guy updating the cracker board)

Ian Lovett, the third foundator of BBB updates the cracker board, a borad listing the members that are most likely to go crazy soon...

(the guys in the bootom right corner)

The Carter Brothers in the middle of some members of their fine team of developpers, showing as usual their qualities of show-off (not really show-off but didnt know how to translate)
