The three musketeers behind Xbox Kinect were asked by Channel 9 to talk a bit about Kinect’s success and its future! The most interesting part comes from Kudo Tsunoda, who says that E3 is worth the wait, especially for us Kinect fans.
Checkout the video, and some of my thoughts, after the break.
New Kinect Products
Kudo Tsunoda talks about the future of Kinect in the following way: “That’s something we look to do going forward; not just delivering new experiences that people like, but really keeping Kinect as an evolving platform, building new kind of technology features. Allowing people to do new things, you know, as Kinect evolves, that are really going to enable the, you know, more core oriented experiences that people want.” and then continues: “We don’t have anything that we can really talk about with you today, but I think that -- rolling into E3 -- I think you can see some big announcements. Not just about products, new types of products we’re doing with Kinect, but also new technology features we’re going to be delivering as well.”
Prediction: You are not the only controller

The looks on those guys faces (around 03:00 in the video above) when Kudo talks about this new stuff that’s coming up, together with the specific mentioning of ‘core experiences being enabled by Kinect soon’, Rise of Nightmares not being on-rails according to Famitsu, Darren Bennett mentioning that he likes to ‘wield a sword with Kinect’, and the fact that Kudo is talking about products being released for Kinect leads me to believe that Microsoft will release an additional controller for Kinect. Granted, they’ve got the ‘You are the controller‘-slogan that needs an update after that, but there’s not much more withholding them from adding an extra peripheral to the Kinect mix. Price-cut? No. Additional controller, same price: Yes.
This would be perfect: the accuracy of a controller and detection speed of new software combined in a Kinect platform. Yes, they could also use the Xbox 360 controller, but a more motion friendly version of a controller would be a good idea in my view. All-in-all, I’m going to be bold about it, and predict (as I predicted Kinect’s success about half a year ago) that there will be an additional controller for Kinect at E3 2011. You are allowed to give me harsh comments if it will turn out to be false Prediction: You will not be the only controller after E3 2011 special , but I’m just stating what I firmly believe will be the case.
Initially development studio Rare and game artist and visionary Peter Molyneux wanted one as well, but came to the conclusion that “you didn’t need [a controller with Kinect].” In my view, this could be the case but an additional controller could help convince a second wave of gamers to get Kinected and Jump In!
