Amazon Games and Embracer Group's Middle-earth Enterprises Strike Deal for New 'The Lord of the Rings' Game

Amazon Games and Embracer Group, through its wholly owned subsidiary Middle-earth Enterprises, part of the operative group Freemode, today announced they have reached an agreement for Amazon Games to develop and publish a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The upcoming game will be an open-world MMO adventure in a persistent world set in Middle-earth, featuring the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy. The game is in early stages of production, with Amazon Games Orange County—makers of the popular open-world MMO game New World—leading development. Amazon Games will publish the game globally for PC and consoles. Additional details, including launch timing, will be shared at a later date.
"We're committed to bringing players high-quality games, whether through original IPs or long-beloved ones like The Lord of the Rings," said Christoph Hartmann, VP, Amazon Games.

The as-yet-untitled The Lord of the Rings game continues Amazon Games' growing momentum in game publishing and development, following the success of its internally developed MMO New World and action RPG Lost Ark from Smilegate RPG, both of which have toppedSteam and Twitch charts and continue to nurture strong player communities. Amazon has also announced publishing agreements with NCSOFT for Throne and Liberty, Bandai Namco Online for Blue Protocol, Crystal Dynamics for the next major Tomb Raider game, and Glowmade and Disruptive Games for unannounced titles.
Separately, Amazon Studios produces the hit series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Prime Video, which takes place during Tolkien's Second Age of Middle-earth and is unrelated to this upcoming MMO game in development with Amazon Games.

GOW Ragnarok, SW Fallen order 2, Returnal, FF16, Gran Blue Fantasy RPG, FF7 Remake part 2, Spiderman 2, Diablo 4, SF6, Tekken 8, MK reboot, Alan Wake 2, RE 4 Remake, Suicide Squad kill the Justice League, nieuwe AC, Marvel Wolverine, Hogwarts Legacy, %Ratchet and Clank, SW Knights of Old Republic Remake, GTA 6 en tig indie games. Ook nog VR 2 met o.a. RE 7 Village en GT7.

Een hele hoop spellen die zijn uitgekomen of nog uitkomen. Zeker niet allemaal mijn genre of spellen die ik zelf wil spelen. Maar er zit toch zeker wel iets voor je tussen?

Er zijn meer dan genoeg games waar ik naar uitkijk en enthousiast over ben, maar ik doelde meer op echte verrassingen waarbij je een hele zaal hebt die met tranen in de ogen omhoog komt omdat er iets aangekondigd wordt wat ze nooit (meer) hadden verwacht, zoals een paar jaar geleden de bombshells van Shenmue 3, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Street Fighter 5, en The Last Guardian.

De games die je nu noemt die zijn al een poosje bekend.
GT6 en Mortal Kombat zouden natuurlijk dikke hype worden, Wolverine gameplay ook, maar dat verwacht ik nog niet, want ze zullen zich eerst op Spidey 2 focusen, en verder weten we nog niets.

Gaan we iets zien uit de studio van Ratchet & Clank? Gaan we een nieuwe LittleBigPlanet krijgen? Een nieuwe WipeOut? Een nieuwe Dragon Quest? Of DQ Builders? Of eindelijk DokeV of Little Devil Inside? Eindelijk iets over een nieuwe Power Stone?

God of War Ragnarok en Horizon Forbidden West waren cross-gen EN ‘meer van hetzelfde’, dus dan is het enthousiasme sowieso minder. Je kunt nu niet echt zeggen dat we in 2023, bijna 3 jaar na de release van ‘next-gen’, we nu echt ‘los zijn’ wat betreft baanbrekende nieuwe games die iets doen wat voorheen onmogelijk was. Sterker nog, Ratchet & Clank en Eternal en Demon’s Souls waren een veelbelovend begin, en Forbidden West DLC schijnt ook erg indrukwekkend te zijn, maar het lijkt wel of het erg gestagneerd is qua vooruitgang.

Maybe Tsushima 2 en Persona 6, dat zou wel juichwaardig zijn.

De games waar ik momenteel het meest naar uitkijk zijn Koreaans (DokeV) en Chinees (Wukong, en nog wat andere open world wuxia zooi). Ghost of Tsushima 2 (hopelijk nieuwe locatie, dus geen Tsushima) zou ook juichwaardig zijn.

En als Spidey 2 er geweldig uit ziet (andere setting dan NY), dan ook zeker wel hype.

Maybe een fucked up alternate reality version van New York, want de stad was al saai in de eerste game, 2de game iets beter vanwege de sneeuw, maar nog steeds een saaie grid-based rechthoek zonder variatie. 3de game in weer die setting zou echt teleurstellend zijn.
