GameSpy: What are the main graphical differences/improvements featured in the Xbox versions of the games? Hannes Seifert: There are many graphical enhancements that we are making in the games. One of the biggest being that the majority of the textures are being reinserted at a much higher resolution. The end result is going to be a game that looks very sharp with intricately modeled areas and landscapes. Specular lighting will add to the dramatic vibe of both Liberty City and Vice City and fully immerse the player into the game. This feature will allow for objects to be illuminated by the light that is cast from every street lamp and headlight in real-time. Perhaps one of the more noticeable enhancements we are making in the game is the reflection maps. The result will be smooth graphics throughout Liberty City and Vice City, which will be particularly noticeable on the hundreds of vehicles. Every vehicle in the game will be enhanced in poly count and to further highlight the differences between them, real-time reflections will be cast of varying degrees -- high-end sports cars will look the part with a styled gloss, while the older, low-end cars will naturally not be quite as slick. Each major character model will be updated and skinned using higher polygon models. Plus, the clothes will have rim shading on them, making folds and pockets in the clothing more apparent. Lastly, all of the game's particle effects (from smoke to water sprays) will be enhanced to give off a more accurate reaction and look. Raindrops will cling to the game's camera and fire will give off more radiosity resulting in a more realistic appearance. Advertisement GameSpy: Will both games support high-definition progressive scan modes? If so, what's the maximum resolution supported? Hannes Seifert: We upped the resolution for HDTV usage, enabling 480p support along with a 16 aspect ratio for widescreen TVs. The end result is a larger viewable frame that is considerably sharper. GameSpy: Are there any changes, in terms of storyline or gameplay, or is the Xbox pack simply a tasty port of the PS2 titles? Hannes Seifert: The gameplay hasn't changed -- Grand Theft Auto is Grand Theft Auto, we didn't want to change it. We felt that this would be unfair to everyone who already knows it and loves it for what it is. Both games already have an enormous number of vehicles and a huge variety of missions resulting in hundreds of hours of gameplay. We didn't want to mess with that. They are the same games that millions of PS2 owners couldn't tear themselves away from. However, thanks to the powerful hardware capabilities of the Xbox, we've been able to make significant improvements in the graphics. We've done everything possible to ensure that an Xbox player gets a great game with an even more polished look. Players will also be able to create their own stations and can make multiple soundtracks by ripping their favorite CD's onto the Xbox hard drive. Grand Theft Auto 3 recognizes each soundtrack as a CD that can be changed by the new CD changer (in vehicle), and for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (since it is the '80s) each new custom soundtrack will be recognized as a tape that can be changed in the new tape deck (in vehicle). Being that the Xbox supports Dolby 5.1, we were able to enhance the sound quality and make sure each effect was at its best. GameSpy: How do you think Xbox owners will embrace the games after all this time? Hannes Seifert: We hope that they'll be thrilled that Grand Theft Auto is now available on this platform and that they will enjoy it as much as the millions of PlayStation 2 owners who couldn't put the games down! We feel that Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City fill a huge hole in the Xbox market and we are certainly aware that there has been a lot of anticipation for these games on this platform. Nieuwe Screens: Meer screens.....
