METAL GEAR NOW A MULTIFORMAT PROPERTY
In what appears to be a major policy shift on the part of Konami, the next Metal Gear title will be spread across all formats
17:47 Synonymous with the PlayStation brand, Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 are considered among the finest software on their respective formats and have doubtless shifted huge amounts of hardware thanks to the "only on Sony" tag associated with them.
Yesterday it was revealed that a new title, Metal Gear Solid Substance, was in development, which was thought to be the elusive "Metal Gear X" - an update to PS2's Metal Gear Solid 2. Now the Japanese release has been translated, it appears that Metal Gear Solid Substance is a new title due for release on PS2, Xbox and PC, with a further Metal Gear title due two years later. Furthermore, Konami plans to investigate the possibility of an online Metal Gear title in the future.
This is massive news for the Metal Gear franchise, in no uncertain terms, as one of the biggest, most lucrative franchises on planet Earth seems to have transcended it's "exclusive" shackles, and entered the heady realms of platform agnosticism. Great news for gamers indeed, but one suspects Sony won't exactly be thrilled. This certainly doesn't entirely eliminate the possibility of an exclusive MG title in the future; nevertheless, multi-format Metal Gear is irrefutably A Big Deal.
Commenting on the company's financials, Kuni Neo, President of Konami Europe said: "Konami of Europe is proud to contribute its part to these impressive results with our most successful year in the company's European history." Continuing he stated: "As a next step, we will further enhance our efforts with the first products from our new European development studio." The Euro press release, however, rather conveniently omitted all the offending articles present in yesterday's Japanese releases. Funny that.
Konami of Europe remained tight-lipped regarding any of its upcoming titles, but in a little under two weeks' time we should have a better picture of what the future holds for Solid Snake and co.
