Xbox Live Setup Options
This it to help you people with questions and concerns all at once. Here are 3 setup options...
Direct Connection
Use a direct connection if you don't mind that your cable or DSL connection won't be shared with your PC (or other device). If you do want to share your cable or DSL connection with your PC, use a router connection or shared PC connection instead.
If your cable or DSL modem uses a USB (not Ethernet) connection, or if it is an internal PCI modem, you must use a shared PC connection.
Hardware Requirements
Hardware requirements for direct connection:
High-speed Internet service with cable or DSL modem (provided by your ISP).
Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors.
Xbox video game system with an Xbox Live–enabled game.
Connecting Your Hardware
To connect your hardware:
Turn off your Xbox console and your cable/DSL modem before connecting any cables.
You might need to disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
Connect the Ethernet out port on the cable/DSL modem to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using the Ethernet cable.
Most modems use a standard (straight-through) Ethernet cable. However, some modems require a crossover Ethernet cable. See your modem documentation for more information.
Turn on your Xbox console and your cable/DSL modem.
Connecting to Xbox Live
To connect to Xbox Live and play:
Start your Xbox Live–enabled game.
Choose the option for Xbox Live play.
This option depends on which game you are playing; see your Xbox Live-enabled game documentation for more information about playing your game on Xbox Live.
If this is the first Xbox Live account that you have created on your Xbox console, choose Start the Xbox Dashboard, and continue to Create Your Xbox Live Account. If you have already successfully created an Xbox Live account, use the Gamertag you created on that account to sign in and play.
Creating Your Xbox Live Account
When you choose to continue to Create Your Xbox Live Account, your Xbox console will automatically connect to Xbox Live.
If the connection is successful, continue with account creation. When you're finished, sign in to Xbox Live using your new Gamertag!
Troubleshooting
If your Xbox console cannot automatically connect to Xbox Live, you will receive the following message: "Could not connect to Xbox Live. Do you want to troubleshoot your network connection?" See Troubleshooting Your Direct Connection for more detailed information about the problem and steps you can take to fix it.
