What better way to launch Microsoft's promising Xbox Live service, then to release a new exclusive game from the Unreal series alongside of it? Sure, games like Phantasy Star Online and Midtown Madness 3 should top the many Xbox Live launch titles, but Unreal Championship is the first title to come to my mind when talking about Microsoft's upcoming online gaming service. Although UC will not offer anything completely new and groundbreaking in the way of gameplay, you can expect it to bring back everything we've loved about past Unreal games while offering a few new elements. Unreal Championship is not a sequel to Unreal Tournament, however the game takes place during the same era as Unreal Tournament… the dark future of Unreal. Unlike Unreal Tournament for the Dreamcast and PS2, Unreal Championship is being specifically designed exclusively for the Xbox console. This means better graphics and control. Because Microsoft has no plans for a keyboard and mouse, it means you're going to have to use your Xbox controller. But you can bet Digital Extremes is keeping that in mind, and will be including jump and speed pads, double jump, and auto-aim, a feature that could have been Quake 3's (Dreamcast version) difference between being a good game, and a great game. There is no doubt that UC is visually stunning. The textures and lighting are awesome, and the outdoor environments (which we didn't see too many of in Unreal Tournament) are huge! And the game runs at a smooth 60 frames per second. The character models and weapons are quite impressive as well. It wouldn't be an Unreal game without an interesting arsenal of weapons, and UC doesn't fall short. There are 12 weapons in all, some new, some re-incarnations of old weapons, including the Rocket launcher, Biorifle, Lightning gun, and more. Each weapon has a secondary attack as well. The game will also include around 30 different looking and playing characters, whose stats increase as they play, somewhat like leveling up in an RPG. The levels also seem more varied this time around. Although there'll still be some dark indoor levels, there will also be huge outdoor environments, of course taking advantage of the Xbox hardware. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Double Domination, and Bombing Run are the five modes of play included in UC. In Double Domination, you must control 2 points on the map for 10 seconds, and in Bombing Run you must shoot bombs into your opponent's goal. In single player, during some matches you will gain control of your team, and will be able to issue commands to your teammates. It will be essential to pick your team based on the stats each character has and has gained. One new addition to the game is land, air and team-based vehicles. Although I have yet to see these in action, I'll accept any new additions to what should already be a great game, with open arms. If vehicles have half the effect on UC as they did on Halo, they should be a great new addition. But the real meat of UC is in its multiplayer, like all arena-based FPS's. And UC's multiplayer is massive. The five modes of play listed above will all be playable in multiplayer. The game will include a 4-player split screen alongside LAN play, but online play is where it's really at. 32-players online was originally announced, that number is now only 16. Hah, only 16. UC will support the voice communicator as will all Xbox Live titles and the voice masking feature, allowing you to make your voice sound however you want it to. It will be easy to find your buddies and just as easy to find other players of your skill level to square it off with. An online ranking system will also be included. Infogrames promises no slowdown, and UC should showcase why the broadband only approach will change the way we play console games online, and there is no doubt why. Xbox already has a whole slew of current and upcoming FPS titles, and Unreal Championship is quite possibly the most well known. If the game plays half as well as it looks to, we are in for a real treat. The addition of vehicles sounds great, and who can complain with such an extensive multiplayer? If UC lives up to its name, it will be one of the top Xbox titles of the year.
