MICROSOFT not only wants you to play its online console games, it wants to make it easier to do so too.
Until now, if you did not have a credit card, you had to beg your parents or spouse to sponsor a subscription to Xbox Live, the online gaming service by Microsoft.
Now, with the Xbox Live Modus Mastercard, gamers can join the online community no matter their age, as well as be armed with their own global ATM card.
Issued by Maybank, the Modus Mastercard is essentially a pre-paid credit card.
Unlike credit cards (which require a minimum income) or debit cards (which are tied to a bank account), Maybank’s pre-paid cards have no age-limit and or subscription fees.
Riding on the Mastercard Electronic network, the card can be used to make purchases at more than 8 million establishments.
It also allows users to draw money from 900,000 ATM machines worldwide.
Parents need not worry about their children going overboard with card spending - they can curb its daily spending limit to the amount deposited.
According to a Maybank spokesman, if you really want to know what your kid is spending your money on, you can also ask for monthly printed statements which cost $2 a month.
The card can topped up at Maybank cash deposit machines, Maybank branches, Internet banking or at AXS Stations.
While it can be used to make online purchases, it is restricted to sites which support the TeleMoney service that is created by local mobile payments firm Systems@Work.
You have to look for the ’Modus By TeleMoney’ logo if you want to shop online.
So far, the number of supporting websites is still relatively few, like those from Fujifilm and mobile content companies (Zingmobile and efusion).
The Xbox Live Modus Mastercard will be available for $19.90 at Xbox retailers and Maybank branches.
