So what is XSN, anyway?
XSN takes the experience of playing sports games on Xbox Live beyond the Box and onto the PC, enabling you to set up leagues and tournaments with friends, neighbors, or total strangers through xsnsports.com, meanwhile tracking all of your stats, wins and losses, ranking your skills, and even awarding you trophies for winning championships (some virtual and down the road you might even win actual prizes). The service will also enable you to scout future opponents by checking his or her stats on running the ball in NFL Fever 2004 or how well they shoot the three in NBA Inside Drive 2004. You can e-mail the link to your box score to everyone in the league if you want to talk smack, and in the near future, maybe as soon as the first quarter of 2004, you will be able to schedule games in advance, or have league news sent to you on your PDA or cell phone using Microsoft's .Net technology.
When does XSN launch?
The service will launch on August 28th to coincide with the release of NFL Fever 2004.
What other games will the service support?
In addition to NFL Fever 2004, XSN will work with NBA Inside Drive 2004, NHL Rivals 2004, Amped 2, Top Spin, and Links 2004.
What XSN modes will each game feature?
NFL Fever 2004: Online leagues (4, 8, 16, or 32 players) and single elimination tournaments
NBA Inside Drive 2004: Online leagues (4, 8, 16, or 32 players) and single elimination tournaments, with NBA-style best of seven series planned further down the line.
NHL Rivals 2004: Online leagues (4, 8, 16, or 32 players) and single elimination tournaments, with NHL-style best of seven series planned later down the line.
Top Spin: Online leagues (4, 8, 16, or 32 players) and single elimination tournaments, with major tournaments from the professional tour planned later down the line.
Links 2004: Single elimination stroke play tournaments, stroke play, match play
Amped 2: Single-player score competitions (tricks, media), and Posse competitions (up to eight players per posse, top four scores added together for team score).
I hate playing online because every time I'm about to win, the other guy quits on me. What if I join a league and everyone is like that?
In each player's personal profile, there will be a sportsmanship rating. This has nothing to do with running up the score or making a late hit against the quarterback. Sportsmanship on XSN has to do with the number of games, seasons, and leagues you've joined and completed. It is about maintaining the integrity of competition, so if integrity is something you demand in your opponents, you can join a league where everyone ranks high in sportsmanship and you shouldn't have a problem. Also, in Links, if you're playing against someone and they back out in the middle of a round, you can complete the round on your own so your score won't be negatively affected.
Now you're talking. Are there any other cool online modes featured for the XSN games?
If you're a fan of hockey, listen close, because NHL Rivals 2004 will enable you to play a pickup game that consists of 3-on-3 hockey. The thing is, each player on the ice will be a player on Live, so once you choose your player, you're that player the entire game playing with two teammates and playing against three other hockey fans on the other team. You will also get to choose what type of player you want to be, from an agitator to a sniper, and your player's abilities will match that style. The goalies will be AI controlled, and rules like offsides and icing will be turned off to maximize the speed and scoring opportunities. But that's not all. You will also get to play on fantasy rinks like a frozen pond and a community ice rink.
But that's not the only game with something special planned for Live. Amped 2 will enable 8 riders to hit the mountain at one time and you will be able to turn on or off collisions. So if you just want to do your tricks while watching other amazining riders compete down the mountain at the same time, you can. If you want to ride around and try to knock down the other riders, the choice is yours. Sounds like two entirely different, yet equally fun experiences, and the best part is, like I said, the choice is yours.
Can I play ESPN Football or Madden on XSN?
This is Microsoft's baby, so first-party games only, at least for now.
What's the technology behind XSN?
XSN is built on Microsoft's .Net framework and features three tiers of architecture for support: a data extraction/processing server, an SQL server, and a web facing server. XSN also utilizes Xbox Live version 2 technology that enables you to utilize your gamer tag, or as they're calling it for XSN, your passport, to access the web site and link your games to the internet and leaderboard.
What new features can we expect out of XSN in the future?
The possibilities are endless. I'm talking about the ability to play multiplayer dynasty modes, maybe have sponsored tournaments where maybe you actually win a new bag of clubs for winning the Links championship, team rankings for doubles competition in Top Spin, maybe even fantasy leagues like you'd find on ESPN.com, only now, you're controlling the players on your fantasy team and don't have to worry if your star point guard gets pulled over in his Hummer while clocking 90mph, not to mention his stash of hash in the glove compartment. What you're hearing here is just the first step in Microsoft's grand plan to own online sports, and what a first step it is.
Sounds great, but how much does it cost?
Zip, zilch, zero. XSN is free...for now. The basic service of setting up tournaments and leagues will probably always remain free, but when you want to add all the fantasy sports, maybe a sports ticker, or possibly even the part about having scores and schedules sent to your PDA and cell phone, I think you'll have to pay extra for that. How much is still up in the air, but at least for now (and even the near future), it won't cost you a penny.
Is there any way I can see what it's going to look like?
No problem, just click the media link at the bottom of the page to see XSN in all of its glory.
