wow. i can't believe someone actually made a documentary about this stuff. It's funny reading about it, because i actually grew up in the boston hardcore scene. i was really young (like 14 or 15) when i first started discovering who FSU were. There were just some shows you had to stay away from (Madball, 454 big block, grudgeholder, brawl park, etc...) but what really got frustrating was when these f**king guys started taking over just about every show i went to (life of agony, tree, sam black church, 6L6).
I always tried to mind my own business at the hardcore shows, but i was never afraid to dance, hit people and get hit. My only fear was hitting the wrong guy, and getting my ass dragged out back to be beaten or stabbed. I had seen it happen at just about every single club i went to at one time or another. A couple of my friends got jumped by FSU, for doing absolutely NOTHING.
One of the saddest days of my life when when i realized it was all getting too dangerous, and i had to stop going to the shows that i loved so much. At a show once, an FSU member sized me up while i was dancing with a couple other people in the pit, having a good time. The FSU member took a full roundhouse kick at the back of my head, from the side of the pit and from my back so i didn't even see him. He somehow missed me, and at that point my friends grabbed me to tell me what had happened, and that we should probably leave...which we did.
Of course, there were a handful of band that refused to play if known FSU members were present, and certain clubs had their own policies regarding them. The problem was that FSU started hanging outside the shows and harrassing the bands as well as the kids going to the shows.
The other problem was the fact that at MOST of the clubs that held all the good hardcore shows, the clubs employed, as security and bouncers, who else? but FSU members...
If you were a kid minding your own business and had a run in with FSU, and if you didn't have a large number of gigantic friends with you...you were in deep trouble.
Eventually...they ruined what was left of our scene here, and i'll never forgive them for that. Chabo was a pretty regular face around here... if you saw him you knew to stay the hell away from him and anyone you saw him talking to. It got to the point where you were so busy making mental noted on who to avoid, that you missed all of the music that was going on...
I might just pick up this DVD, for nostalgia purposes, but i really would rather not support crosscheck records for this piece of crap glorifying violence and fear.
I will find a way to pirate this DVD and burn it. They don't deserve my money....
