Ryu ga Gotoku Studio has shared a raft of details on Yakuza 7 (aka Yakuza: Like A Dragon in the west), outlining how the brand-new 'Live Command RPG Battle' system will work.
Yakuza 7 will mark a fresh start for the series, ditching real-time combat for a more tactical, turn-based approach.
Chief Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama served up all of the salient info via a series of tweets, confirming that during Live Command RPG Battle encounters, the fight will be "constantly in motion", with characters that "move in real time" and "fight in a living city". That means the city will remain in motion as the fight unfolds and characters will react to the environment around them, bumping into things like bicycles or street signs. You may even get blown into the road and hit by a car.
Yakuza 7 will continue to use the Dragon Engine, so objects will possess the same physics as the previous titles, and you'll still be able to wield objects like bicycles, traffic cones, and signs as weapons. Depending on your character class and traits, you can even kick objects towards enemies, or pick them up and use them. Other enemies can also interrupt a battle, and a combat encounter will start from right where you're standing, except when fighting certain bosses. Some enemies might appear from a hiding spot to ambush you.
Turn order is dictated by your character's stats and some "action-like operations" like repeatedly pressing a button to match an action during an attack will also feature. An 'Auto' mode will also feature, so you won't have to worry about successfully performing button matching instances. Instead, the game will choose actions based on your character's class and traits. You'll also be able to assign jobs to your party and equip items like in an RPG.
Apparently, the game will also be the longest Yakuza to date, so there'll be fast travel, and strong enemies that act as barriers to other areas in Yokohama. Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Yakuza 7) will be coming to PlayStation 4 in Japan from 16th January 2020, before presumably dropping in the west sometime around summer 2020.
