TGS 2002: DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball Eyes-On
Tecmo unveils a long trailer at their TGS stage show. We share the details.
September 21, 2002 - It's tough not to love DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball. The game is so unabashedly joyous about the female form, so happy to bring gamers exactly what they want, and so infectiously happy throughout that it's hard not to get caught up in the virtual hysteria. We got another visual reminder of why the game is going to sell approximately one billion copies today at the Tokyo Game Show. Tecmo's booth was playing an extended trailer for the game at various intervals throughout the show. The presentation also featured live bikini girls, who handed out posters after the movie finished playing. Unfortunately, we were prohibited from taking video of the trailer, so you'll have to make do with our impressions.
Unless you've been living under a rock or a GameCube, you'll know that DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball is an action sports title from Team Ninja, the crew responsible for Dead or Alive 3 and the upcoming Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive code: Cronus. The trailer showcased not only the sports action of the beach volleyball game, but portrayed the girls themselves, in all of their virtual glory. Man, did it portray the girls.
The trailer starts out with Zack's DOA 3 ending movie, in which he takes the DOA money, gambles with it and wins big at the roulette wheel. In Beach Volleyball, the story goes that with his new bank, he buys an island, names it after himself and invites the women of the game to come compete in another tournament. When they show up, though, it was all a ruse--there was never going to be a tournament. Zack just wanted all the ladies to himself on one island. Instead of fighting, they decide to play volleyball. See how that works?
In the trailer, each woman in the DOA bunch gets her own moment in the sun. Spliced between sparing clips of the volleyball game, we got to see little snippets of the girls on their off time. We've heard that these personal profile movies will be unlockable as you complete certain tasks in the game. These movies include shots of girls stretching, splashing in the waves, adjusting their bikinis, stretching, hopping across floating objects in a swimming pool, rolling around in bed, feeding each other sweet, sweet strawberries... did I mention stretching? These cinemas are evocative and playful, and never cross into the realm of being distasteful. The trailer was good, clean fun. Emphasis on fun.
In addition to unlocking movies, it looks as if you'll be able to purchase newer and more revealing swimming suits, and gear like sunglasses, hair clips and the like. The trailer cycled through a lot of these objects, and it looks like you'll have your hands full trying to afford it all.
While the exterior elements of the game will be crucial, the game itself looks pretty good. The graphics are virtually flawless, the volleyball engine looks good from what we can tell, and the settings are quite unbelievable. While beach volleyball does not afford you the opportunity for tons of different locales, we did see a nice jungle court somewhere in the mix.
These ladies handed out posters following the show.
As for the legendary "breast physics engine," rest assured that it's alive and well. There was scarcely a shot in the trailer that didn't employ it at least subtly, much to the delight of the mostly male crowd.
Yes, DOAXBV is decidedly a crowd pleaser. We know this, so we'll keep bringing you all of the coverage you desire. Believe us... we want to. Keep checking back for more Beach Volleyball updates
