June 15, 2004 - In an article by the Wall Street Journal last week, the newspaper's author apparently fudged her numbers, claiming that THQ had sold 250,000 units of the knockout military simulator, Full Spectrum Warrior within a week. In actuality, THQ shipped 250,000 units to retail, not sold-through 250,000 games.
The article reads: "Full Spectrum Warrior has sold 250,000 copies since its release on June 1, putting it on track to be one of the top-selling games ever for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox device."
The game shipped to retailers Tuesday, June 1, 2004 and has indeed received high praise from critics. However, NPD, which tracks retail sales in North America, has yet to produce a report on sell-through numbers, and even THQ, with whom we spoke early this week, has not seen sales numbers on Full Spectrum Warrior.
"We rely on NPD data, and we have not received sales date on Full Spectrum Warrior yet," said a THQ representative. "It's a monthly report, and this reporter said that she received this from a retail chain, but didn't say which one. THQ has not released any data on the performance related to product sales since its release."
The journalist, who did not attribute her source for the numbers, apparently extrapolated her numbers from estimates via a retail contact, who gave her shipping data instead.
We sincerely hope that Full Spectrum Warrior will sell way more than 250,000 units over the next couple of weeks, and even more in the long run. We'll have more on Full Spectrum Warrior in the near future.
