Stuk Wat ign geschreven had.
Friday began with the distinct pleasure of meeting HBO forum regular Dolbex,Steve from Forerunners.org,and Firestorm225,a long time IGN forum goer.We had about a 20 minute ride to the hotel which gave us all time to get to know alot about each other. All three of them were very nice and obviously intelligent guys.At the hotel we met Shishka,a long time HBO forum regular, and Tycho from unreal-ops.com.Then after a short wait we had the dubious distinction of meeting Louis Wu,webmaster of HBO.(Who BTW is definately not a 200 year old 5'2" asian guy, quite the opposite in fact). There wasnt much time to settle in because,to the surprise of all of us,we were invited to dinner at the home of Gearbox softwares' president,Randy Pitchford.
We arrived at Randy's incredible Dallas home(im very jealous) about 7:00 PM.It didnt take long for Randy to give us all the VIP tour.In this tour we were shown what is obviously Randy's pride and joy(aside from his family),about a 20 seat theater room that included a state of the art widescreen projector that projected its image on a 123" screen. The theater also had ,what i added up to be,about a 1200 watt surround system that any self respecting home electronics geek (such as myself) would absolutely drool over.
After the tour,we settled down for an incredibly delicious feast which included some of Randy's wifes very good wine collection, which Steve had enjoyed very much, and alot of.During dinner Randy went into the history of Gearbox software. He also went into the history of other software developers companies and game designers.Even though I had little knowledge of the history of the games discussed(FPS's mostly)it was interesting hearing all about the companies and game designers I had only read the names of in the manuals of the games.
After dinner we were led back to Randy's theater room where he quickly demonstrated the sight and sound with the asteroid chase scene in Star Wars episode 2.Lets just say....incredible.After that it was time for some multi-player xbox halo goodness.Luckily for me I have never made the claim I was a Halo multi-player god, which quickly became evident. In round one,I came in 3rd,followed closely by Louis Wu only one point behind..The next time,I came in last.....o_o.Shishka and Dolbex clearly reigned the whole night.I had forgotten how much fun this game was in multi-player,we had a blast. Then,Randy asked that I demo some of what I was good at,some good ole warthog launching and off the map exploration,I think he enjoyed it.We played till a little after 11:00 and returned to the hotel to get rested for the next day.Kinda impossible considering what we knew we were gonna be treated to.
Saturday morning were picked up in a 10 person stretch limo, pretty sweet I might add. From the Hotel we were taken to Gearbox softwares' offices in Plano Texas. There we met up with the guys from Red v/s Blue. Two of which were in town for the Quakecon 2003 in Dallas.Cool guys as expected.I also had the opportunity to meet some more of the Gearbox crew, all very good guys.Lots of Half-life stuff on the shelves,as well as plenty of Halo posters and such.As you would expext there was plenty of computer equipment around as well as several Xbox's.They also had a large closet packed full of all kinds of candy bars, snacks, and sodas as if they were prepared for a nuclear holocaust.I know where I'll be if such an event were to take place.
After we all conversed for awhile were led to the conference room where the purpose of our trip waited. You guessed it,Halo PC.In the room was 4 widescreen monitors(yes Halo will support widescreen),and one pc hooked up into a projector shining on what I would guess to be a 60" screen. We all took a seat and producer Mark Tardif took us on a tour of several of the campaign levels. It quickly became evident that gearbox had done a marvelous job in the conversion from the Xbox version. The most notable things I noticed were improved textures(nice bump-mapping,pixel shaders and other tech stuff I know little about),reflections, and water effects.Randy stated they worked closely with Nvidia, and ATI to improve those things,as well as the active camo effects, which in IMO were extremely nice.Randy says his favorite textures are at the beginning of the level "Truth and Reconciliation",I tend to agree.
After a tour of the campaign levels we moved to what we were all looking forward to,the multi-player levels. In a conversation with one of the level designers(My apologies i didnt catch his name, niether did anyone else, but I do know him as Hellface in the BGH forums),he stated that they began working on some indoor levels the reconsidered because Halo already had great indoor levels and need some outdoor levels to take advantage of the vehicals.Good move IMO.
So lets move on to these levels:
