    E3 2009: LEGO Rock Band Hands-on
Remember Rock Band? Now, it's blocky and plastic.

June 3, 2009 - Back in April, the powers that be announced that LEGO Rock Band was coming to a whole bunch of platforms, and the videogame industry freaked out. Some complained that this was the franchise jumping the shark, some couldn't wrap their heads around the concept, and others were just happy to have more songs to play with their many plastic instruments.

Today, I picked up the microphone, chose "Kung Fu Fighting," and put LEGO Rock Band under the microscope, and the results were surprising. Oh, wait… the results weren't surprising; they were exactly what you expected.

Rock out with your block out.

If you've played any version of Rock Band, the general gameplay in LEGO Rock Band should be very, very familiar. The vocal track runs along the top while notes fall below for the bass, guitar, and drums so that everyone can play. Yup, it's Rock Band. The LEGO tweaks are there, though. The little band thermometer is up in the left corner and shaped like a LEGO block. Similarly, the score tracker is a LEGO block, and rather than banking points, you're banking studs (the little pieces of plastic you picked up in the other LEGO games). The band that I was in was comprised of a LEGO guy in a Native American headdress and LEGO dude in full knight gear.

If the LEGO skinning didn't give it away, this game is aimed at families. If you get to the point where you'd fail out in regular Rock Band, you'll just lose studs in LEGO Rock Band. If the easy difficulty is too hard for you in regular Rock Band, you might want to check out super-easy difficulty in LEGO Rock Band. If you liked winning the van and jet in regular Rock Band, you'll be happy to know that you can win those items in LEGO Rock Band as well as a spaceship so that you can play on the moon.

This isn't simply making a band and jumping into a world tour -- although you will make band members. Here, you'll be going about… being a band, I guess, and challenges will pop up via cutscenes. One will start with some LEGO dudes trying to demolish a building, and when they fail, you'll have to rock hard enough to topple the walls. In another scene, you'll be performing on a helicopter while being chased by a giant robot.

    Where's the underwater drum solo?

A full track list hasn't been announced, but the demo I played had a handful of tracks such as "I Want you Back" by the Jackson 5 and "Girls and Boys" by Good Charlotte. The instruments all worked just like you'd expect and provided that same Rock Band experience; it's just laced with LEGO stuff and that's not a bad thing. Look for more on the game as we get closer to the game's release date.

    Hands-on: Lego Rock Band

It's tempting to just take a review of Rock Band 2 and stick it under here and label it Lego Rock Band, because that's pretty much what it is, albeit with a few family-friendly tweaks. They're mostly aesthetic, and Harmonix is working with Lego, who has approval over all of the songs in the game, to make sure it's an experience that little kids can enjoy with adults. It might be a bit jarring to see Suzie, age 6, gyrating along to "Sex Bomb," for instance.

The biggest difference is that instead of just hitting notes, you're also collecting Lego studs each time you play correctly. Just like in all the other Lego games, the studs have a purpose, and in Lego Rock Band you can use them to upgrade your avatars by purchasing outfits and other accessories for them. They've even changed the in-game notes to look like the flat, round, single Lego studs. Besides that, the game is Rock Band as you've all come to know and love it. Mostly. What more could there be? Read on to find out.

First of all, many of you (and us) have asked: why are they making this game in the first place? Alan Moore from Harmonix told us that the company feels that it has created the "ultimate party game" in Rock Band, but they wanted to make it a more family friendly experience. In addition to "clean" songs, this game features the same sanitized Lego humor that's been a staple of games like Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones, and you can play on imaginative Lego music stages like a volcano, underwater, and even the Moon.

The brief demo we were treated to at E3 took place on a stage built out of ginormous Lego blocks, and when we headed over there was a band led by an eight year-old kid on guitar. It was seriously adorable, and should have been the packshot for this game. We watched the cute kid wail on his guitar for few moments, then booted him off so we could play. We don't have all day, after all.

We played through one of the game's "Rock Power Challenges," which are sprinkled throughout the game. They involve your band using their music to make something happen, and in our case it was helping out a local demolition team to bring a building down while we played along to the Foo Fighters' "Breakout." You know, as musicians do from time to time. As you kept playing, windows would blow out, the elevator would plummet, and eventually the whole thing comes crashing down triumphantly at the end of the song.

They're releasing the game with "Lego songs," and we're not sure what those are. Harmonix wasn't talking about DLC just yet, and they also weren't telling us if the Lego Rock Band songs work in Rock Band 2 or vice versa, although we're guessing if they're limiting the setlist to family friendly songs, you won't be able to import RB1 or 2 songs into Lego. The demo included "The Final Countdown," "Kung Fu Fighting," and the aforementioned "Breakout," but what makes a song Lego in the first place? We'd like to submit the following ideas, gratis:
    • "We Built This City" -- Jefferson Starship
    • "Another Brick In The Wall" -- Pink Floyd
    • "Brick House" -- The Commodores
    • "Build Me Up Buttercup" -- The Foundations
    • "Lego" -- Frou Frou
    • "Blockhead" -- Devo
    • "Brick" -- Ben Folds Five
The game will be out during the holiday season for the Xbox 360, PS3, the Wii, and the Nintendo DS. Harmonix wasn't sure if Lego would be releasing playsets based on the game, and there are currently no plans for a Lego Rock Band bundle, or even for Lego-shaped peripherals, which sucks. We'd totally buy a Lego guitar.

Jackson track confirmed for Lego Rock Band

Lego Rock Band will have a Jackson 5 track, Traveller’s Tales boss Jonathan Smith told VG247 this morning.

“We have the Jackson 5’s amazing ‘I Want You Back’; “Breakout” by Foo Fighters, and ‘A-Punk’ from the brilliant Vampire Weekend,” said the developer.

These new tracks are in addition to those confirmed when the game was announced, named:
    • Blur: ‘Song 2′
    • Carl Douglas: ‘Kung Fu Fighting’
    • Europe: ‘The Final Countdown’
    • Good Charlotte: ‘Boys and Girls’
    • Pink: ‘So What’

Ik kan er wel om lachen in ieder geval. :D En ook echt legoblokjes als noten, hilarisch. Als ik nog kind was, had ik het wel geweten. Nu ben ik bang dat het een te mainstream setlist wordt en ga ik toch voor GHV.
