I would recommend holding the right shoulder pad and shoot for a really hard, fast shot.
I assume you lot are talking about a Drive shot, this is the R2 shot in ps2 version (where the player literally blasts it so hard he jumps of the ground). I tried lots of different ways of doing it and couldn't get it to work (i didnt consider using that horrible little black button)
but.... i found out if you 'click' the left control stick with the xbox pad at the same time that you would normally press R2 on the ps2 pad it works perfectly.
what you will find though is that the pressure exerted on the left control stick to achieve a 'click' will often make you wildly inaccurate, it does take some getting used to but i was bloody relieved that it worked!!
Left trigger + shoot is a high scoop/chip.
Shoot and then right trigger (after the bar has started moving up) is a lower dink-style chip which is far better IMO. With the left trigger chips you have to literally tap the shoot button for no time at all, whereas with the right trigger chip you can use most of the power bar and it still won't be a really high chip
Oh, and right trigger can also be used for a couple of other things, such as doing a dummy
Change the options to lob2 double tap to ok,and while your at it change your long passes to type 2
