    An Interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold talks T3, Westworld, True Lies 2, and more.

June 27, 2003 - Writing an opening intro. to our interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger is a lot more difficult than it sounds. After all, the man is firmly ensconced in his Hollywood legend status. His body of work includes everything from the generally kid-friendly (Kindergarten Cop, Twins) all the way up to some of the rawest sci-fi, fantasy, action films around (True Lies, Predator, Total Recall, and Conan the Barbarian). Then of course there is the role that made him globally famous, gave him a series of catch-phrases, and made him one of the highest paid actors ever (Arnold received a reported $30 million for reprising the role a third time): The Terminator.

T3: Rise of the Machines, opening July 2, 2003 marks Arnold's third time playing the cyborg sent back in time to change the events of the future. Though missing director James Cameron from the helm, T3 promises to feature some of the impressive visual effects, non-stop action, hardcore sci-fi elements, and epic battles that characterized the first two films. With an approved budget in the stratosphere ($170,000,000), the involvement of Stan Winston, and a fresh take on the franchise by Jonathan Mostow, it looks like we're in for another ride.

Arnold sat down with IGN FilmForce and a few other journalists at a massive press day for the film at LA Center Studios. Wearing a crisply pressed open-collar shirt and looking far younger than his 56 years, Arnold cozied up to the recorders and talked about coming back a third time, his all new co-stars, and the buzz about his potential run for the office of Governor in the state of California.

Arnold talked about what clues an actor can look for in the beginning that a sequel will be as good as the previous two. "You never know that. But, when you read the script – remember, they've been working on it for 12 years – when you read the script, then you pretty much know and you get the feeling. I'm very good in visualizing the things that I read, and it became very clear that the idea of the script was to keep the look of the movie the same as the Terminator 1 and 2. The danger of it is when you're under a new director, that he maybe wants to all of a sudden do the high wire thing, and there's terminators flying around, and they're doing martial arts – I would not have gone for that anyway. It was nice to have Jonathan [Mostow, director] talk about that he wanted to keep the look of the movie the same as the other ones were, and the same reality kind of feeling and then we worked very extensively like we did on the second one, which was the first time we had two terminators fight each other. To analyze, and really go through it, for days. What are the rules there, and what is it like when two machines that weighed 2,000 pounds each – what would happen to all the objects they fly into, when they hit the concrete? This concrete, for instance if you and I would hit, nothing would happen to the concrete and everything would happen to our heads, it would crush our heads. But, when you have a 2,000 pound machine and you lift it up and you bury it in the cement, it will go in there. Some of our special effects department had a jackhammer that was an equivalent of 2,000 pounds, and showed us what damage it does to a tiled floor, just so we could be accurate. We paid a lot of attention to details. When you see, for instance, me landing in the hallway after she kicks me, I hit the floor and then all the tiles get ripped up and I get buried into the concrete. That takes a lot of preparation."

As in previous Terminator movies, Arnold has a nude scene. After so many years away from the franchise, his feelings on the scene were "Anytime you take your clothes off and do a nude scene, it's embarrassing ... That's why it was important to train hard. I went into the mode of training as if I'm preparing for a competition again."

Arnold described to reporters the feeling of returning to the set as the Terminator after his 12-year break from the role. "I have to say that it was an incredibly satisfying feeling. To step through the first scene, the first night of shooting on the set. I remember it was the set where I crash with the car into the T-X, bury her into the wall and then walk up to the girl. That scene was the first scene. As soon as I slipped into the Terminator jacket and I put on my sunglasses, and I had my leather gear on – because I knew the next scene, the same night we started shooting the motorcycle scene where I knock the cop off the motorcycle ... This is it. All I need is the leather jacket and the sunglasses, the whole lead outfit and jumping on the motorcycle – I'm back. So then it felt really great, and I really slipped into the character very quickly. The jacket, it's such a symbol of so many things, for me. It's like a symbol of success, of what it has done for my career and the first Terminator, it made me a star, in the second Terminator it made me a superstar. Each time it had a tremendous impact on my life, and I can relate to the character, also, that whole idea of being like a machine."

There has been no announcement of a fourth Terminator movie yet, and Arnold was unable to shed light on whether a fourth installment would be made. "I did not know we would do a second one until the first one was over. There's certainly no way I can let you know."

Although, if a T4 were announced, Arnold would want to be involved and return to his role. "Absolutely. I think what makes the Terminator movies unique, is that – except the first one – is that they were done because the fans demanded them. Rather than studio executives saying, 'Hey, wouldn't it be great to turn this TV series into a movie? We could make guaranteed money.' Or, 'Let's make this movie into a sequel, that will give us guaranteed cash.' They're playing it safe because everyone is under so much pressure now to perform. Our movie is because no matter where I went, no matter what interview I did the last 12 years after Terminator 2, one of the first questions was always, 'Are you going to do another Terminator?' ... Not only in this country. I remember going to Japan and promoted Special Olympics, and I was sitting there not talking about movies at all. I said all these things about Special Olympics and how we have to create equality and respect and tolerance for people with mental retardation. 'Do you have any questions?' They would say, 'Yes. I have question. Will you do another Terminator?' I would say, 'Yes, I will do another Terminator.' No matter where it was, it was an interview for a political interview, or after-school program interview, it's always one of the first questions. So, I know how much people all over the world wanted it. Also, the campaign they waged and how many letters that Cameron has gotten over the years ... There was an organic way of bringing it back. Then, when we did the test and when Warner Bros. bought it, the first thing they did was they did a survey, and it was like a 100% – not a 99% – 100% want to see. No matter who they asked, they wanted to see it. The second thing they look at is the negatives. It's like a political campaign, what are the negatives? No negatives. So, that is extraordinary."

Lately a lot of press attention has been given to Arnold's political ambitions and a possible bid for a new role – the Governor of California. When it was brought up at this T3 press conference, Arnold had this to say, "I'm not going to answer your question, but I'm circumventing that and let's just say that I've always included the press in everything that I do, and I will continue to do that. I stay on target with this promotion ... The important thing here is, to stay on target and on message, and the message is: Terminator, Terminator, Terminator. One thing at a time. I know you can't help it, you're absolutely correct, because I have in the past said I'm interested in it, and that if the state needs me that I will be available and I would sacrifice my movie career for that, because I think that's a bigger cause, so to speak. But I don't think about it, because I will know when that time comes."

Next up for Schwarzenegger will include a remake of a 1973 Michael Crichton sci-fi thriller. "Warner Bros. is putting a movie together for me right now, which is Westworld ... I move forward like a steam machine. I roll over things and grind it out."

Arnold will not be playing the lead in Westworld, a robot gunslinger played by Yul Brynner in the original. When asked about his role choice for the film, Arnold did not want to play another robot, "Because I'm doing the robot in Terminator, exactly. It wouldn't be interesting. I think if you do, for instance, like in True Lies. The character I played in True Lies, since True Lies hasn't materialized a sequel, there's many people that came with similar stories like me playing a secret agent, and I turned it down, even though those were good scripts. Because, it's much better if you stay with one thing. Like, Conan and that type of movie, only should be Conan ... rather than going off and doing something else that looks like a Conan movie. So, there's a certain point where you just have to say, 'Money doesn't mean everything.' You have to stay true to the characters."

The original Westworld is a film that Arnold is a fan of. "When they said, 'Look at the stuff we have here, what do you like to do?' I immediately said Westworld, because I've been waiting for that project to excite the studio for the last three, four years we've been talking about it. 'Let's do Westworld, let's do Westworld,' because it's a great fantasy ride. Now you can do so much more, which is what a Westworld should be, besides a Western town and a Roman Gladiator town, and those things. It can go to the future, and be a futuristic like Total Recall kind of thing. You can in one movie have like five, six very interesting roles."

Arnold also gave an update on the status of True Lies 2, which has been put on hold for several years now. "The script is written, but as you know, after 9/11 happened, Cameron was worried because there's an airplane scene – a terrific airplane scene – that didn't have anything to do with the terrorism that we had in 9/11, but it was a great fight scene inside the plane while the plane goes down and this kind of thing. It was a very important moment in the movie, and he felt like he can't do that and therefore has to rewrite it ... These things take a long time."

So how does one keep a character fresh and original for three movies – especially when each movie actually has a different robot of the same model? Arnold talked a bit about the differences in his Terminator characters. "The first time in the history of the American filming studio where the same character fell in the top 50 favorite heroes of all times and the 50 top villains of all times. That has never happened. This was happening with two movies. So, what you try to do with every movie is you try to add another dimension, but in the same character. You change the circumstances around it. In this movie, I think one of the things that we wanted to do is a sense of we have now done a hero and a villain and in this movie we try to do both, where I become a villain actually for a short period of time. I'm the savior and the hero and all this. But how can you make it turn into a film like the first movie was, a David and Goliath, where I was kind of like the monster, big thing that you couldn't ... how do you turn a Goliath into a David? That's in this movie. I think we did a great job in successfully turning that and making more futuristic stuff on it, by just making the vulnerable character ... To make the audience go in that direction from the first to the second to the third movie, that's the fun part about it. Of course, you have to read into it, be thoughtful about it, how to do it, how to act it out, and how to come in as a big machine and then slowly show the vulnerabilities. That was the idea."

Between Terminator 2 and 3, Arnold had shoulder surgery and a motorcycle accident which broke six of his ribs. When asked what drives him to keep going, Arnold joked, "To me, that means nothing. I am a machine." He then continued on a more serious note, "I always look at the end result. To me, the end result is to do the movies and what is on the screen, because that's permanent. The pain that he goes through to get there, or a surgery or this or that, is all to get there, but what is important is what is up there, and that's the final cause. To me, all the other stuff becomes irrelevant. Mind over matter – if you have no mind, it doesn't matter."

leuke actie, leuk verhaal, superverrot klote eind.

    snappen jullie?
