Performance and Customisation
As I mentioned at the beginning of this review I played Oblivion on a top of the range PC. The game played extremely smoothly. Load screens between different areas (for instance entering dungeons) lasted only a few seconds, so short I couldn’t even read the hints on the load screen itself. Similarly Bethesda have done a great job of not requiring any load screens when exploring the wilderness. All loading is done in the background and there’s no stopping and starting as you load different sections of the wilderness. It makes for some real smooth playing.
But for those of us who aren’t willing to sell their bodies to science for top of the range PCs there are a number of different graphical changes that can be made in the game’s options to better optimise the game for your system. There’s normal things like screen resolution, view distance and item rendering distance and then a few more advanced options.
While the game obviously won’t look as good on lower spec systems I’m sure you’ll be happy with the compromise in graphics and performance.
Xbox 360 players needn’t worry about performance though. While I didn’t get to see the game being played on a 360 I’ve been assured that the game will play as well, and look as good as it does on a high-end PC.
