Seriously disappointed hardcore SNK fan....REVIEW
I would characterize myself as a hardcore SNK fan. I bought the neo geo aes system back in the day, and bought almost every fighter for it. I've played and enjoyed almost all the kof's, from the original versions to the dreamcast version, ps2, etc. I'm not a big fan of playing online. I'm going to basically sum up this game below after approximately 2 hrs. of playtime.
Gameplay 9/10
The gameplay is excellent. Controls, even on the dpad are tight, and the motions are accurate. Simplified controls kind of ruin it a bit, but they are optional. Criticals are absolutely awesome, and a great feature with the critical meter. The supers are the same as before, but spruced up. The gameplay is indeed well done, and very fun. I can't knock it. If you love the gameplay, and will play alot online, BUY THIS GAME. The key word is online.
Single Player. 2/10
The single player offcering here is just abysmal. The tournament has two generic 30 second long cinemas interspersed in the five round tournament. There is no story, there is no boss, there are no character specific endings, there is just a time attack arcade mode that is dreadfully boring. There are only three difficulty ratings (snk's eight scale rating is always preferred), and the game simply cannot feel any more barebones in this category. Seriously, three more months dedicated to this category would have changed this game. Look at Blazblue. Amazing. Even it's arcade mode has some story.
Character roster: 5/10
What's here is great. The problem is, there's not much!!! 22 fighters, with plenty of fan favorites missing, from rock and geese onward....It's almost ridiculous. Seriously. No unlockable outfites, maybe an unlockable character or two?
Graphics: 10/10
I can't dispute it. The graphics are simplly beautiful. In my opinion, much better than blazblue. I'm praying this game does at least well enough for snk to build off this foundation and actually give us a full game. What we have here is half baked. But the graphics are gorgeous. Yes, there are not many levels, but what is here is practically breathtaking. I really, really, haven't ever seen character art, animations, and backgrounds as awesome as this. This one category really blew me away.
Replayability? Online or OFF
Online; if the network gives a good connection; ENDLESS. The gamelay is tight, and the game is beautiful.
OFFLINE; practically zero. Who in their right mind wants to play a time attack mode with no boss, no direction, barely any unlockables (gallery stills), no story, and a paltry selection of characters....
