Real Madrid should let Van der Vaart go for free
Real Madrid has had a busy summer buying players. The Spanish club has spend more than 250 million euro on Kaká, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Raúl Albiol, Xabi Alonso, Esteban Granero and Alvaro Alberloa.
Now Real needs to offload players, because it can only register 25 players for the domestic competitions. Last week Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was shipped to AC Milan. Rafael van der Vaart seems to be next. Coach Manuel Pellegrini has told the midfielder that he is no longer part of the squad and he won't be registered.
The Dutch international is planning to leave. 'It makes no sense staying here', he said after Pellegrini's message. With the World Cup coming up in the summer of 2010 the 26-year old wants to play on a regular basis.
'It's obvious that Real is not planning to let Van der Vaart play and does not want to make use of his services anymore. He even did not get a player's number for the new season. In such a case they should let him walk away for free', says FIFPro lawyer Wil van Megen. 'Apparently he's worth nothing to them, so why should they ask a transfer fee?'
Real Madrid signed Van der Vaart from Hamburger SV in August 2008 for a fee of 15 million euro. His contract runs until the summer of 2013. Van Megen continues: 'FIFA and the clubs always talk about players who should respect their contracts. But in this case Real is the one who is not respecting the contract. They have just written Van der Vaart off by refusing him to be a part of the team. In my opinion by acting in this way Real has lost the right to demand a transfer fee for this player.'
