[Boeken] Halo - The Fall of Reach.

Natuurlijk mag hij het op z'n lijst zetten, maar 10 tegen 1 dat z'n leraar er toch niks over gaat vragen dus Cyber hoeft niet eens een uittreksel te regelen.

 

Aangezien de leraar het spel heeft, en mij al heeft gevraagt om het boek te lenen, ga ik er vanuit dat hij intresse heeft om het te lezen.. En mij dit problemen geeft bij een mondeling volgend jaar

 

Ik heb mijn bookreport bijna af en aardig dat ik ben zet ik hem hier maar ff neer ,zodat jullie hem ook kunnen gebruiken

Author

Eric Nylund is a relatively unknown writer. In fact, writing was not his original
career choice. He majored in chemistry during college, attaining both a Bachelor’s degree
in chemistry and a Master’s degree in chemical physics. He began his writing career in
graduate school. He decided to become a writer after reading a poorly written book by his
favorite author. He believed that writing for a living must not be that hard if that book got
published, so he began writing his first novel. While writing that novel, he came to the
realization that writing isn’t as easy as he had thought, so he enrolled in the Clarion West
writer’s workshop. After finishing that program, he began writing again and finished his
first novel, Pawn’s Dream. He has previously published five novels. Two are virtual
reality thrillers, A Signal Shattered and Signal To Noise. Another two are contemporary
fantasies, Pawn’s Dream and Dry Water. The final novel, a science fantasy novel, is
titled A Game of Universe. He currently lives near Seattle with his wife.

Summary

The universe of Halo: The Fall of Reach is in a state of war. Humans have been
exploring the galaxy. During there exploration, they come in contact with a collection of
alien races that coexist together. The aliens sent a message in English stating simply
“Your destruction is the will of the Gods…and we are their instrument.” Thusly, the great
war between Mankind and the Covenant, as they were later determined to be called,
began.
Humans have found themselves to be little match for the Covenant. At every
encounter, the Covenant has been far superior in weapons and speed. As such, the
humans have felt that they need to find a new way to compete with the Covenant. It was
from this need that the SPARTAN Project was created. This projects goal was to make a
group of Human cyborgs that would be able to destroy the Covenant.
The story centers on the life of one of these SPARTANs, John 117, also known as
the Master Chief. John, like all the members of the SPARTAN program, was recruited
when he was only six years old. He was chosen because even then, he showed superior
strength, speed, and intellect at that age. He was taken from his home and placed in the
program with the justification that this was humanity’s last hope. The remainder of his
childhood was spent in brutal training as well as undergoing painful and often fatal
genetic enhancing surgeries. In the end, John rose to the top of the group and became
their leader.
Halo’s universe is filled with a great deal of technology as well. Humans are in
possession of not only ships capable of traveling between galaxies, but also AI
constructs. These are computer programs that are able to think for themselves. They are
created by the military to assist with various functions. Every spaceship is given a
construct since the ships are considered too complex for humans alone to manage. One
such construct is known as Cortana. Cortana is a special type of construct known as a
smart construct. There are two types of AIs in the Halo world. Dumb constructs are
limited to only a specific area of expertise. They are unable to grow beyond this area of
expertise. Smart AIs, conversely, are able to grow unchecked intellectually. Cortana was
this type of AI and for that she would pay a price. Smart AIs never last more than 7 years.
The reason is their hunger for knowledge eventually causes them to neglect their own
survival. It would be as if a person were to spend some much time thinking that they
forget to breath. Though Cortana would eventually die as a result of her intellect, during
her lifetime she will be far more intelligent and free than the dumb AIs. She was created
in this way because she was made to be a counterpart to one of the SPARTAN cyborgs.
Cortana chooses the Master Chief as her companion. Cortana is capable of
interfacing directly with the SPARTANs advanced armor (called MJOLNIR). Using the
various implants that are in the Master Chiefs body, she is able to enact his desired
movements, and enhance his senses. With Cortana, the Mater Chief is more powerful.
The two were made for each other.
The book ends with a single human ship jumping to a random location in space
hoping to draw the Covenant away from Earth. What they find is a world shaped like a
ring with an Earth like atmosphere. The Covenant follow them to this location and a
whole new story begins at this point, which is told elsewhere.

1. The title was chosen because at the end of the story they arrive at a ring-formed artificial planet. A ring is also named a halo.
“the Fall of Reach” comes from the planet ‘Reach’ that is destroyed at the end by the Covenant.

2. It’s a novel. A science fiction novel, because the story happened in the future.
3. a.
The main characters are
-John 117 (master chief) is a super soldier developed by UNSC (the military) he is (like said in the book) “Neither the smartest nor the fastest nor the strongest of the Spartans. But he is the bravest.”
For everybody that’s sees him, he is like a brutal killing machine. But in the book you also read about his feelings, he is also many times scared, maybe not of the aliens but he’s scared of loosing a team mate, because he is their Squad Leader.
-Captain Keyes is the Captain of a space ship named the Iroquois. In the beginning of the story he is just a beginning pilot he helps Dr.Halsey find candidates for Project: Spartan.
Later in the story he gets his own space ships a defeats 4 Covenant ships (two frigates, one destroyer, one carrier),in what becomes known as the ‘Keyes Loop. Destroying that much Covenant ships with one ‘earth’ ship, thought to be impossible and really boots moral on the colony planets from earth.
b.
Keyes helped select John when he was a kid. But they don’t see each other again until Keyes is decorated with a medal of honor. John doesn’t recognize Keyes, but Keyes remembers John, when John asks him where he knows him from, Keyes can’t say, because it’s classified.
c.
The characters are round characters because you know very much about them and they evolve towards the ending of the book.
d.
Yes. In the beginning John follows orders without thinking about them. But later on, he begins to think about, for example blowing up a whole city when there where still human survivors there. Eventually e follows orders, but not without trying to save as much humans a possible.
4. The story is about a war, a Holy War, against the humans. There are also many reverences
to biblical text. For example: Samuel 034 was lost in battle. In the Bible at Samuel chapter 3 verse 4 "Toen riep de Here Samuël, en hij zeide: Hier ben ik" (“Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, Here I am”)
I have also looked for John 117 and found the following: De openbaring van Johannes chaper 11 verse 7: “En wanneer zij hun getuigenis zullen voleindigd hebben, zal het beest, dat uit de afgrond opkomt, hun de oorlog aandoen en het zal hem overwinnen en doen doden.” Clearly this also has something to do with the book.
5. The story takes place in the year’s 2517 to2552. Every chapter begins with the time, date and place. The story takes place all over the universe. But in the beginning mostly on Reach (a military planet). Later on a battle takes place at Cote D’Azur (a city) Master Chief has orders to nuke the city and wipe out al the Covenant with it.

6. The book has 37 chapters. And each chapter starts out with a little bit of information like Date, year and place. This makes it a little bit easier to read, because sometimes they just skip some years and then you don’t know what happened..

7. Most parts of the book take place in chronological order. Only the Prologue at the beginning of the book doesn’t. The book starts out with a fight between Master Chief and his team mates and the Covenant. But after that, it al happens in logical order.

8.a. The story is told from a 3rd person perspective.
b. I didn’t find the book hard to read, but they use many ‘military words’ so you need to have a basic understanding for that language. For example: instead of Kilometres the use clicks. This is just a basic example, but many people don’t know such things..
c. The book has an open ending. Because on the end, they arrive at a artificial ring-shaped planet. And then it ends. (But the game, starts where the book ends.)

10. Personally I liked the book very much, no, I loved it. And that means a lot coming from me. I never read books because I thing they are boring, but this book opened my eyes. It was the first book I read where I just couldn’t stop. The story is so well told, and the space battles are described very well. The battles exist of 2 parts: space battles and land battles. Personally I liked the space battles better. There were much more tactics involved, and they were described very well. There were many exciting moments for example the battle at Sigma Octanus IV, when about 20 human ships fought 7 Covenant ships. They sacrificed a repair ship Cradle so that the incoming plasma beam wouldn’t hit the rest of the human ships.
I know that the book was made up by the Author, but it was very real, and I think it is al possible in the real world. The Sci-Fi weapons and gadget’s where described very well, and they even told some of the scientific information about it.
I loved the book very much and I already bought the sequel. I can really recommend this book to every one who likes science fiction books.

Iroquois heads back to Reach for debriefing - Covenant tracker attaches itself, unseen, to the Iroquois' hull.

2552 Aug 12 Master Chief debriefed by ONI at Camp Hathcock, Reach - meets Keyes for the first time, sees Halsey again.

2552 Aug 27 Project MJOLNIR begins, with 25 Spartans

2552 Aug 29 Spartan 117 gets a neural interface upgrade (to deal with Cortana) and new armor (with built-in Covenant shield technology)

2552 Aug 30 Cortana gets revenge on Colonel Ackerson, part of ONI's Special Warfare branch, for attempting to eliminate Cortana and Master Chief - she gets him transferred to the front.

Spellings fouten onder voorbehoud

Je hoft het niet eens te zijn met mijn antwoorden, diti s wat ik van het boek vond. Op sommige plaatsen heb ik er uits bijverzonnen. Omdat ik niet helemaal zin had om het weer op te zoeken in het boek..
Ook heb ik de eigen mening een beetje overdreven

 

KIJK! Dat verandert de zaak. Dus dat word gewoon een dik half uur lullen over de onesthetische opvoeding van MC! Daar moet je Freud en psycho analyse bijhalen joh: MC wordt al op z'n 6e gescheiden van zijn ouders!! Daar moet wel iets moois uit te halen zijn.

Ff denken. Dr.Halsey wordt zijn surrogaatmoeder waar MC nooit meer vanaf komt vanwege de hallucinogene verschijning van Cortana die in zijn hoofd geplaatst wordt. MC ziet het daardoor als zijn plicht de stemmen [cortana dus] in zijn hoofd op te volgen en neemt wraak op de Covenant door de flood los te laten. The flood zijn weer een weerspiegeling van zijn twisted mind en uiteindelijk belandt MC, door alle flood en daardoor zijn hersenspinsels dood te maken, in een schip inzijn eentje met Cortana. Net zoals die griekse mythe begint MC dus een relatie met zijn moeder. Zo. Ik begrijp er geen donder van....stoned . Maar dat word een dikke 10!!

 

Alleen moet dat dan in het engels, dan dan wordt het een stuk moeilijker

 

Op m'n werk is het in de pauze echt dodelijk saai. (Hoop snel ander werk te hebben!) Dus heb ik Halo : The Fall of Reach meegenomen, en deze in anderhalve week uitgelezen.
Wat een prachtig boek. Kan niet wachten tot ik Halo : The Flood in m'n handjes heb.

Ben btw. vandaag begonnen met de tweede keer lezen van The Fall of Reach.

 

Master Chief is the main protagonist. He kills tons of aliens. Master Chief is very cool: he is my hero. I want to have voices in my head as well. I love my mother so I want her in my head because I'm adopted. So. Did I get an 'voldoende'?

 

Als ik dat verslag van mij nu doorlees zitten er veel spel fouten in, en ook de zins opbouw slaat soms nergens op
Maarja.. heb niet echt zin om het te verbeteren..
Is zowiezo toch al een stuk beter dan de rest van die gasten bij mij in de klas die nauwlijks engels kunnen

 

John is separated from his parents at the age of six. Dr. Halsey becomes his substitute mother with he never forgets. Later on in the story a artificial intelligence being (Cortana, made to look like Dr. Halsey) is placed in his armor trough a neural uplink. Thanks to that, he gets hallucinations of Cortana in his head. John sees it as a duty to follow the voices in his head (Cortana). In the game that is the sequel to the book, John releases a alien race called the Flood (this is also the name of the second book “the Flood”)
At the end of the story he end up with Cortana on a ship al alone.
Just like in the Greek myth, john ends up having a sort of relationship with his mother.

Vind je toch niet erg?

 

Nee tuurlijk niet, maar om het echt beter te maken zou ik ff een stukje griekse geschiedenis bekijken (goed opletten met geschiedenis!!).

Ik bedoel, de mythe van oedipus zit er dus in (MC verliefd op zijn eigen moeder);
MC = spartan: is gebaseerd op Sparta ['afvallige' provincie Griekenland]: de machtige strijders van Griekenland die Griekenland uiteindelijk ook van vele noodlotten behoed heeft.
Ook: het verval van Griekse Rijk kwam ook door een verdeling binnen de bestuurders zelf (dit ook in TFOR: remember hoe een bepaalde groep op aarde zich afvroeg of het 'spartan project' wel doorgevoerd moest worden?).

Ik denk als je het hier een beetje op gooit, dat je dan echt een dikke voldoende scoort!

 

Ik heb het boek dus al gebruikt voor mijn leesdossier. Ik weet nog niet of het is goed gekeurt. Ik heb het namelijk pas in deze periode ingeleverd, dus ik weet pas bij de rapportuitreiking of het goed was.

Maar ik wil je best sturen wat ik heb.
